“Lots of surprises”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed March 19, 2013

We were looking forward to another wonderful B & B experience for our anniversary, which we do quite often to celebrate. We are used to being welcomed by the host, given a quick tour of the common areas, and then relaxing on our own. Our room at Asa Ransom had a lovely jacuzzi and some beautiful furnishings.
At this B & B, we stepped over the threshold to a growling dog, a Golden Retriever to our surprise, that went on and on until we retreated to the outer entryway and the hostess finally called the dog off. There was no welcome or tour, just abrupt information about where our room was and where to eat in the morning. The irritated tone and lack of needed information did not encourage relaxation, nor did the dust under the furniture that was obvious from our seating.
We were looking forward to meeting the innkeeper in the morning, but when we saw him there was no chance for introduction, just an abrupt directive on where to sit for breakfast, also delivered with an irritated tone. We were served by a sweet waitress who brought us a bill after the meal, showing the price of the meal, so that we could leave her a tip. This was also a surprise to us. It's worth mentioning that the dog's "area" is the hallway where the food comes from the kitchen to the dining room.
In summary, there was a definite lack of hospitality but the potential for pleasant surroundings if the innkeepers recognize the value of their guests.

Asa Ransom is a gorgeous place with 10 different rooms all decorated perfectly. The room descriptions and color pictures are on their website. A plate of fruit, cheese and crackers welcomed us with music playing from an old fashioned radio. The restaurant was excellent (I'll do that review in the Restaruant section) and the breakfast was absolutely delicious. Coffee is available 24 hours. MAP is a good deal! The grounds were beautiful covered in snow. We will be going back in the spring or summer and get a balcony room to sit out and enjoy the view.

Room Tip: We stayed in the Joseph Elliott(#1) which is the smallest room and the only one without a fireplace...

2 of 5 stars Reviewed January 9, 2013

My husband and I live out of town, but my parents live in Buffalo and we were coming in to town over Christmas to visit and to take my mother out to dinner for her birthday. I made reservations for 5 of us for dinner a couple of weeks in advance and told the person I spoke to on the phone that we would be celebrating my mother's birthday. She told me on the phone she would make a special note of that. We were all very excited about coming here for dinner. The last time I had been here it was wonderful of course that was about 14 years ago before I moved out of town. Needless to say it was a total disappointment! When we arrived on December 23rd we had to wait for about 10-15 minutes to sit down in the dining room even though we were right on time for our reservation. That was okay though. So when we sat down the server came over and asked us about drinks. When my husband asked her about any wines she would recommend he was told that she didn't have any recommendations because she didn't drink and then said well I used to drink, but not anymore. We couldn't believe that is what she told us. So she had no idea about wine and yet she is serving it at a restaurant? So we then ordered our wine and she disappeared for quite a while. She seemed like she was very busy yet the restaurant wasn't full. She then finally came back and took our order. Three of us ordered soup we waited and waited for it. Finally it came, but only for two of us that had ordered the vegetable soup which was good, but my husband did not get his french onion soup until about 15 minutes after we were served. When it finally came it was awful! The cheese on top wasn't even brown it was like it had been cooked in the microwave. There was no taste to it. He had to wait a while again for the server to come back to tell her because she didn't come over to our table right away to see if everything was okay. When she did come back it was with salad that two of us had ordered. He told her about the soup and she took it back and said we wouldn't be charged for it. We then waited and waited some more for our entrees. At this time we had been at the table for well over an hour. Finally the entrees came. They were just okay except the fish that my husband ordered which was not good at all. He had asked the server if it came over risotto and she said yes and when it was brought to the table it wasn't. It was served with a risotto cake when he told her that she said it was served over risotto she said oh no it's a cake. So she obviously had not idea. So he sent his dinner back. A lady then came out and asked what was wrong with the fish and my husband told her. She then said she would take it off the bill and she would bring him something else, but to be honest we didn't want to wait another hour for the entree we had been there for almost two hours at that point. So he just had some of my dad's dinner. At that point we were all very disappointed at the whole dining experience. When the server came over and asked if anyone wanted dessert we really just wanted to leave at that point so we said no, but I also thought that she would have brought something out for my mom for her birthday, but she didn't and just brought the bill to the table. I then told her it was my mom's birthday and I thought something would have been brought out to her. She said no only if you had ordered dessert and then we would have put a candle on it. So at that point I was really annoyed. We had taken my mom here for a special birthday dinner and it was not a good experience at all. I would never recommend this place it obviously has gone down over the years and I know my parents were disappointed as well and wouldn't recommend it. I really wanted to take my mom to a nice place to celebrate her birthday, but unfortunately this wasn't the place.

Thank you for your review and our apologies that your dining experence not being up to expectations. Your server is receiving extended training in guest service and will be montered very close. We have changed the soup procedure so the timing for our guests will be much more efficient The kitchen will be more acturate in writing up the specials as the discription should have included 'risotto cake' and not just the word risotto.
Again our apologies and thank you for helping make our service what is expected.

5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 6, 2012

We stayed 6 nights at Asa Ransom, in the Joseph Elliot room. This is the smallest room but we found it comfortable and relatively quiet - it faces out to Route 5 so there is some road noise early in the morning.
The breakfast was great! Fresh fruit bowl, muffins, pastries and a selection of about 6 entrees are available; served at a window table by the owner himself, we felt the breakfasts were memorable. We sampled almost every selection over our stay,
We also had a family dinner one evening - the raviolis were outstanding. After touring more expensive areas we were very pleasantly surprised by the wine prices. Service was great, again a memorable experience.
We enjoyed coffee early, and could get a glass of wine late if we desired. The sitting room is a great place to talk.
Location: nice walking area through the town park or along the walking trails. The Clarence Hollow brochure is a bit misleading - the shops and businesses look close together on the map but are actually spread out over several miles on Route 5.

Thank you for the very fine review. The entire staff here at Asa Ransom are very happy you enjoyed your stay. It is our passion to give each guest the individual attention they need and deserve.
Thank you for bringing to our attention for not having the distance between the business in the Clarence Holloww Brochure marked. I am working on the 2013 edition and will include a mileage gauge. Thank you!

Very lovely with period details of course. What was the most fun though was how it had a little restaurant downstairs that brought the surrounding community in. We loved all the interesting people and it seemed like alot was going on. Also LOVED Grace the dog. What a sweetie! Great staff ready to help and supply suggestions of sights to see. We loved it!

Charming period inn with delightful dining room on the premises. We had our own porch for sipping early morning coffee. Service was amazing with attention to details. Breakfast was a treat with more home-made choices than we could possibly enjoy. Dinner reservations made it easy for us to continue to enjoy the quite and quaint village of Clarence. There was a surpise gift for returning the room key to the front desk. All in all, we were made to feel very welcome and treated with kindness and respect. We will return.

Room Tip: Choose a main floor room if you have trouble with stairs.

Stayed in the Wilson Greatbatch room - very spacious, nicely furnished with a lovely fireplace. Bathroom was smallish and its' updated decor did not harmonize with the antique/reproduction furnishings of our room and the rest of the B&B. (not the plush bath one would expect attached to this bedroom) The king bed was comfy; the pillows should have been replaced long ago. The new flat screen TV was tiny and barely visible from the bed, the logical place to watch it from. The breakfast room is charming and breakfast includes some nice home baked muffins and fresh fruit as well as a selection of entrees. Our breakfast server was gracious, but it took three tries to get eggs poached with "firm" yolks and the final result was eggs that had been put in the oven to cook - which caused the featured local cheese on top to become stringy. Day two brought the "home made" granola which was stale. My husband left it uneaten, and unmentioned, after the egg debacle of the previous day. The staff was warm and welcoming, the amenities of the property are lovely but a few things need refining to bring these accomodations up to par.

Thank you for your comments on your recent stay. The waitress apoligies for not relaying your egg request to the kitchen.
The bathrooms in the older section of the Inn are not as spacious as in newer 1992 southeast wing. We will put on our thinking caps on how to find space to enlarge.
New pillow are on order, with some being the new 'Soft Chamber' and some the new
'Memorelle' type.
Thank you again for helping us better serve our guests.
