Friends and I were visiting the 1000 Islands for the week and decided to visit the Singer Castle on Dark Island. (We were able to visit with my friends boat but there is boat transportation by calling Uncle Sam Boat Tours out of Alex Bay or by using Rockport Boat Line out of Rockport Canada) The castle, which was built by Fredrick Bournein, the fifth president of the Singer Sewing Machine Company, in 1905 as a "hunting lodge" has been restored and is furnished with much of the original furniture as well as period sewing machines that have been donated by people that have visited. We had a wonderful tour guide that took us through the castle showing us the secret passageways, the Victorian "spa", and other details that set this home apart from others of that time. Well worth a visit.
