“Very pleasant, warm, friendly and peaceful place”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 18, 2007

Went for a Mother-Dtr spa get away weekend. The staff were excellent and attentive to our needs and one got the feeling they wanted to please and accomodate our stay to make it as pleasant as possible. At check in we were given a warm and friendly greeting and given an itinerary for our stay.

The setting was beautiful and the hotel was very clean. The access to the balconies was wonderful and we enjoyed sitting in the wicker chairs just relaxing and reading.

The rooms were small but were delightfully decorated and were adequate to accomodate our needs.

The morning breakfasts were delicious.

We'd readily recommend this Hotel to others.

I stayed here by myself for a two night (Thursday/Friday) peaceful getaway and that was exactly what I got. The Spencer is an old, charming hotel set on the grounds of the Chautaugua Institute on the lake. Since it was off-season and just about everything is closed down, there was almost no one there. And it so happened that western NY was experiencing some thick winter snow that week. It was beautiful. The owners and staff are friendly and accommodating. For those interested in spa services, there was no actual "spa" at the hotel at the time I was there. The hotel partners with professionals that come in and provide these services either in one of the rooms or in the room you are staying if it is large enough. From what I learned, the hotel had plans to convert a couple of rooms into a permanent spa area. I had a small room (the Jane Austen) but it was perfect for just me and it had a large jacuzzi tub... which was a must for my stay. The rooms are beautifully decorated. Connie, who was on staff when I arrived, showed me all the rooms since I was the only guest the first night . Breakfast was out of this world and they served the best tea I ever tasted. I would stay here again on or off season.

We just returned from the Spencer Hotel where we celebrated our 5th anniversary. The Hotel is located in the Chautauqua Institution( the Institution is like its own little gated community in a community). The Hotel was old (circa late 1800's I think I heard) and small, yet a terrific intimite setting. The staff was exceptional, answering all our questions, making reservations for us, always greeting us upon entering and exiting the hotel. The price per night we agreed was to expensive for the room( we paid $250 a night for the Agatha Christie room which did have a jacuzzi tub for two). We were greeted in our room with a beautiful spa basket for us to enjoy in our room jacuzzi tub. We were also provided with bath robes for our personal use during our stay. We had the option to add a bottle of wine or champane to our package, but we thought $35 was a bit much so we were able to bring our own from home. We both recieved massages as part of our package. The massages were fantastic. We were a bit disappointed because we were told we could get side by side massages, but upon arrival it was scheduled for individual massages( atleast it was one after the other). However it worked out just fine. There is no restaurant or vending machines, so it is a good idea to bring a cooler and snacks. However the staff was able to arrange reservations for us at a local restaurant that they recommended. They did provide breakfast for over night guests. The breakfast was very good. It was simple such as french toast, sausage, fruit, coffee/tea and juice.

We went in the off Chautauqua season so we were able to park right in front or near the hotel. Parking was scarce, but atleast we were able to park close to the hotel unlike the Chautauqua season were parking is banned in the Institution .

Overall, it may not have been the best hotel we ever stayed at but it was the most intimite. It reminded me of a bed & breakfast rather than a hotel.

We Had a wonderful stay at the Spencer Hotel! We enjoyed the Jane Austin Experience Package. The room was small but quaint. Breakfast was fantastic! We particularly enjoyed Rachel at the front desk. She went out of her way to make sure we had everything we needed, as well as plenty of great recommendations on area attractions! We will be sure to come back to visit another one of the Spencer's rooms inspired by great Authors! Make sure you ask for a performance from Henry - the lobby pianist!

Every room has its own unique literary theme. For example, the room we stayed in, had hand-painted details (done by professional artists) decorating the walls along with lovely antique decor which reflected the Charles Dickens theme of the room. The hotel is beautiful, quaint and romantic, but the best part was that the bed was the most comfortable one I have ever slept in (which includes the bed at my home)!

My girlfriend and I were looking for a weekend to relax and unwind.

The hotel website looked very interesting, especially the pictures of the different rooms named for famous authors, thus we chose to drive across the state of New York for a visit.

The Spencer Hotel & Spa was homey and comfortable, the breakfasts were unique and delicious.

We were able to find enough activities to do, despite it being the dead of winter. We have decided that we would return when the weather is warmer [probably in the fall].

  • Liked — The rooms were cozy and comfortable; the friendliness of the staff.
  • Disliked — Because we arrived late at night, we had a hard time finding the entrance to the area and then the hotel.
