After our 2 1/2 hour drive from Pittsburgh to The Chautauqua Institute, we were welcomed by Chris, The General Manager, who was sitting on the front porch waiting for us. Once our luggage was taken to our room, we were invited into the pretty Dining Room for coffee and a delicious oatmeal souffle. The food is organic and superb.
The interior of this 112 year old building is eclectic; featuring vintage furniture, original watercolors and a perfectly behaved little mascot named Hannah the dog. The building features many balconies. But, we seemed to like the front porch and it's 8 rocking chairs. we particularly liked the Dining Room for Backgammon. While playing, we were served a great bottle of Malbec and an aged cheese platter which was pre-arranged. The afternoon was most delightful followed by the most wonderful 1 1/2 hour massage each by Ducko, our professional masseuse. I felt like a wet noodle! Dedicated massage room is hand painted with soft music and candles.
Our room was a surprise. The walls featured a hand painted African theme with a hand painted tent over the bed. Very nicely done. There was also a kitchenette w/ small stove and refrigerator. We wake early and made 5:00 A.M. Coffee with the coffee filters which we brought from home and a pot of hot water. The two person spa is deep and has a hand held shower devise. Bring your own votive candles for a little atmosphere. We slept well in the queen size bed. Storage and seating were ample. Each room is dedicated to an author. Our author wrote "Out of Africa". Finished pine floors and throw rugs complete the decor.
While the weather was foggy, windy and cold the first day, we found The Spencer Hotel to be welcoming, warm and inspiring. The guests were mostly our age; late 40's-late 50's and very friendly. The second breakfast was an organic fruit cup and a freshly prepared cheese and veggie strata. Delicious. While there was a parlor, I found the Dining Room to be the most comfortable to play backgammon and needlepoint because the quality of light was good. Wi-Fi throughout as well. Chris, The General Manager was most helpful in guiding us to local attractions and making dinner arrangements. Helen, our Hostess was a quiet, lovely person.
This is a facility for artists and writers. Also a great spot for a romantic get away or folks that need some relaxation. I particularly enjoyed the creative atmosphere. A daily high tea with tea sandwiches, scones and sweets is planned for the future and could possibly be pre-arranged now. Conveniently located one short block from The Ampitheater, The Spencer Hotel proved to be the perfect spot for a well deserved rest and interesting conversations. Thank you for your wonderful hospitality........Minta Roberts Brown, Sewickley, Pa.
