We stayed for three nights in May 2013 at the Glen Iris Inn located inside Letchworth State Park. The inn itself is beautiful and loaded with history.
We had the Maple Suite on the third floor. It was worth going up all those stairs! It had a bedroom and separate living room with two couches. I love to read and it was perfect...I had one couch and my husband used the other and the coffee table for his laptop. Note that there is no internet service at the inn, however. The decor was beautiful and the queen
bed very comfy. It was a very high bed, so not for anyone who might have trouble climbing into it, however. The bathroomhas a whirlpool tub and nice hot shower.
Next to our suite was a huge and beautifully appointed library. It has the only TV for the inn, and is available for all guests. I was happy that few people used it for TV so I was able to sit in there reading as an alternative to the suite.
The inn is situated right at the spectacular Middle Falls of the Gorge. It's almost impossible to describe how majestic the falls are, and located steps away from the front porch of the inn. The falls are lit with white lights at night, making it a great viewing experience.
This is the type of inn where you wake up to a great breakfast in a dining room with great views, and after breakfast just walk out the door to start hiking. There is really not much around but the park and the inn, so fortunately the inn serves a very lovely dinner. Breakfast and dinner are not included in the room rate, but they have a package of breakfast and dinner for $100 which is a good deal if you like to eat a lot! Meals were excellent;luckily as there is not an alternative nearby. Coffee is available to early risers in the second floor sitting area and you can order drinks or snacks on the veranda. This is just my kind of inn.
My husband decided he just HAD to go to Niagra Falls, so we got up early and went for the day. The trip is about 1.5 hours. I would have preferred to stay and relax and hike, but it was fun.
The gorge trail along the rim is incredible. You can walk as far as the length of the park (7 miles) or as far as you want. We were amazed by the views of the three falls and of the river far below. There are many old stone stairs on the trail, it very atmospheric.
All the staff are friendly and helpful. All in all this was a fantastic experience at a very unique inn set in lovely surroundings.
