“Sweet time at the Comfort Suites”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 3, 2007

I stayed at this hotel for 1 night, while on business in the area. The room was clean and spacious, with a sofa & seating area. The bathroom was large and clean. The free breakfast included a nice selection- eggs, waffles, fruits, cereals, yogurt & chilled juices. The dining area had a very cozy atmosphere. There are no other meals served there besides breakfast, but there is a very good restaurant- Phoebe's- right next door with very good food, drinks, a nice atmosphere, & friendly waitstaff. My only complaint would be that the mattress was a little too firm for my taste and I like more than 2 pillows to sleep with. Other than that I was very happy, and would certainly stay there again.

This hotel is way overpriced for the area, but it's the only one of a couple that's in the more upscale market - so they can charge pretty much whatever they please. I've stayed there repeatedly for many years (no choice) and the price just keeps going up much faster than the inflation rate. This last time was probably really my last, with a price of $161. On top of that, the wireless internet did not work in my room (although it worked just fine outside my room). Comfort Suites boldly advertises a 100% satisfaction guarantee, or it's a free night's stay - baloney! They management after much hassle finally gave up a 10% discount for the inconvenience of not having an internet connection in my room. Look for another hotel if you can.

We stayed here for two nights recently while on a trip upstate. Overall, we were perfectly satisfied with the hotel.
Pluses:
--Nice big room--two double beds and a sofabed in a little seating area. There were four of us and we felt we had plenty of room.
--The room was nice and quiet (it looked out onto the back, which is pretty much a parking lot and a field.)
--Friendly, helpful staff (the remote control for the TV was missing from the room, and the desk clerk immediately offered to bring a new one up for us.)
--Attractive seating area for breakfast with a good selection of items (make-your-own waffles, fruit, cereal, bagels, English muffins, sausages, bacon, eggs, yogurt, juices--all included in the price of the room.)
--Wireless Internet available in the room and a good selection of TV stations (no movies or video games available to buy, though)
--Nice big pool with a hot tub next to it; also a sauna room and a game room.
--Nice thick towels in the bathroom and a good shower.

A few minor "issues":
--The sofabed was your standard, not-very-comfortable budget model with a thin mattress. It was fine for my 15-year-old son, but an older person or couple might find it uncomfortable.
--The room needed more storage space (especially since it theoretically can sleep up to 7)--there was just a smallish closet and two bureau drawers (the bureau looked like it had four drawers, but the bottom two were either false or glued shut!)
--The decor in the room was kind of dark and blah.
--The room and hallway outside had a strange odor--not terrible, but noticeable. It may have been from cleaning? Not enough to complain about, but noticeable if you like your hotel rooms to just smell "clean."
--The blankets on the beds were rough and scratchy.
We paid $159 per night which I thought was fair for four people and the free breakfast.

This was the worst hotel stay we have ever had. The first couple of nights were alright. The place was very overpriced for what it was but I guess when you're the only game in town, you can charge whatever you want. We stayed at the Hyatt in Montreal for the same price later in our trip. Our third night at the hotel fell on a weekend. The hotel was overrun by 4 youth hockey teams and their drunken parents. There was no additional staff on hand to handle the unruly behavior exhibited by both the children and their parents. The management's one attempt at managing the group of hooligans was to post "No public intoxication" signs all over the hotel which did nothing. The children ran screaming through the halls and the parents went from room to room sloshing their drinks all over the place while threatening the guests who had complained. When we asked the desk to be moved to a more quiet part of the hotel, we were told it wasn't possible. After we and many other non hockey guests complained repeatedly, the manager finally made an appearance, only to explain to me in a condescending tone that hockey is her bread and butter and if we didn't like it, we could leave. It was after 10 pm and snowing outside and we were unfamiliar with the area so we were forced to stay. The children continued their harrassing behavior throughout the night and into the next morning. We left that morning a day early and went to Montreal. The manager was unwilling to offer any compensation for the poor stay we had. Choice hotels 100% satisfaction policy is a lie. I will never stay at any choice hotel ever again.

The Comfort Suites in Canton: The hotel is clean and quiet, the rooms are spacious, the beds are comfortable, the breakfast is fresh and plentiful, the staff are friendly and helpful, and the rates are way too high.

I recently paid $140+ per night for a room that had wallpaper peeling up at the corners, dresser drawers with bottoms that were slipping out of their grooves, and a sink in the kitchenette area with an improperly positioned faucet which soaked the countertop whenever you turned it on. The pool and hot tub area was spotless, but the floor of the pool at the deeper end was patched and crumbling. The hallways are painted in a dark color and the lights are so dim that it's hard to make out the room numbers next to the doors.

For the same money, one can get a lovely room at a four-diamond hotel in nearby Ottawa or Lake Placid, where more attention is paid to details like these. So how can they get away with charging rates like this in humble Canton? My guess is that most people who need to stay in the area don't have many good alternatives. It's my understanding that this hotel is booked years in advance for events at the local colleges and universities.

Still, if you don't object to spending so much on what amounts to an average hotel room, it's not a bad place to stay. It's certainly much better than the nearby Best Western. My advice, however, is to look into one of the local bed and breakfast establishments if you don't absolutely have to stay right in town. I can recommend White Pillars, where the rates are similar but the food and the ambience are worlds better.

This was an excellent hotel! Things I appreciated:

- Fresh apples and cookies available free for guests upon check in
- Convenient location to both Canton and Potsdam, New York
- Free wireless internet access
- Nice big rooms, including a couch/sofa bed
- Quiet and clean
- Comfortable beds
- Windows that can be opened for fresh air
- Free continential breakfast in the morning, served until 11:00 a.m.
- Free USA Today newspaper
- Friendly staff

About the only thing I could think to do to make a great hotel even better would be to improve the quality of the breakfast: better bagels and more cereal options.

Overall, this was an great hotel and I would definitely stay there again!
