“Escape to the Pampered Past”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 1, 2014

Secluded on a side street in downtown Canandaigua-past looming gates is Sonnenberg Gardens...actually a regal summer estate for the rich. There, you'll get to see the extravagant custom designed and richly built gardens-complete with temples to the gods-that the wealthy used to impress their many opulent visitors. We were lucky enough to get a complete guided tour. (Highly Recommended) The docent was most informative with little tidbits behind every sight as well as a song. Bring sneakers for the grounds are expansive. But, at the end-treat yourself to a glass of wine in the wine cellar near the entrance gate -after a day in the sun -it's a delightful place to give your legs a rest.

“Lots of History and fun facts”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 24, 2014

My SIster and I went to visit the Sonnenberg Gardens on Memorial day this year. It was so beautiful and the people working at the Mansion were very informative. They had a small place to eat lunch and a very nice wine cellar where we did a tasting and bought a bottle to take home. It was a nice way to spend the day. Lots of walking but there is a transportation from the admission area to the Mansion.

“A slice of the past awaits your sampling...”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 23, 2014

While NYS should be ashamed that this place is struggling to be well cared for, with a paid staff of 10 and 200 volunteers, it's evident that this showpiece means a LOT to local folks! A real gem of history that could use a little polish today, with many items needing a bit of care. The mansion is in better shape than the gardens, which lack the restored splendor that was evident in days past. Write your state legislator and tell them this place needs NYS Parks support!

“Very Nice”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 23, 2014 via mobile

Tucked away in a residential area is the wonderful mansion and gardens. The many gardens are nice to walk through but the mansion is the real treat. It is the first historic facility that allows so much freedom to visitors. Very few areas are roped off and you roam at your own pace. Of course that means you are also on your own to figure out what you are looking at. There is some signage but maybe an audio system would help.

“Very pleasant”

Very beautiful. Volunteer staff was very knowledgable. Wear comfortable walking shoes. Take the tram from the admission area to the house. Make sure to see the Roman bath area and the Japanese gardens.
