“Dinner in the Upstairs Bistro was excellent. Wonderful menu selections”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 3, 2013 via mobile

Our group made the short walk across the parking lot from The Inn on the Lake in Canandaigua to The Upstairs Bistro which is part of the New York Wine and Culinary Center. Everyone enjoyed salad or soup appetizers. Soup was either manhattan fish soup or butternut squash bisque. Both were excellent. Scallops were fantastic, lightly grilled and served over mushroom risotto. Risotto was made with barley not rice so it was a bit strange. I had salmon served over pasta alfraldo. It was a huge portion and wonderful. Service was good to. I recommend this restaurant. It can be a little loud at time because of wood floors and ceiling. The full bar is separate from dining area by a hall way. We brought our own wine which they served at no extra charge. We had a group of 9 and they added at 18% tip to our bill. Total came to about $35 each for our meals. Not unreasonable.

“Great for Wine Tasting, Dinners”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 24, 2013

Servers are always knowledgeable and nice. Love the woodwork and interesting food. The food and wines change a lot, but if you tell them what you like, they will find something like it, or better!

“Food was good, service even better”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 21, 2013

Food was alright, not mindblowing or even very good, but it was better than average. Especially the side for the main dish was a very interesting and novel experience, the cook obviously had put just as much thought into that as the 'centerpiece'. The service was excellent, very attentive, knowledgeable about wines (they service all locally produced food and wine), and he was able to advise us well on a reasonably priced local wine. It's the only restaurant with a bit of an ambiance; all others were crowded with families coming back from the ski slopes and hitting the buffet-style dining rooms.

“On the uptick”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 10, 2013

This has always been a great showcase for NY wines, but the restaurant has had its ups and downs. It was was wonderful when Dan Martello was the chef there, but went downhill after he left to open his own place [Good Luck Restaurant] getting terrible reviews from a local paper not that long ago. Luckily, it seems to be recovering. We had a great lunch therea couple of months ago.

“It all starts with customer service”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed January 30, 2013

Unfortunately, I was never able to actually find out how well the company actually does. I was planning a cooking class for my family & friends that was going to cost $2000. However, I constantly felt like I was more of an inconvenience to the staff than a customer. Not impressed with their event planners or their management. Overall, a huge let down since I was really excited to spend the evening cooking with my family and friends. Oh well, it is what it is.
