“Must visit”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 16, 2014

Best zoo in USA.
Take the 2 train from Times Square.
Stay in BACK of train.
Get off at Pellham Pkway and walk about three blocks to zoo.
Safe walk.
Try to go on Wednesday, as it is FREE !
We went on Thursday for ~ $34 per adult $24 per child.
Can bring food in and suggest bring water bottles.
Reasonable food selections (healthy salads).
Lots of walking with hilly terrain.

“fun zoo with extra attractions”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 15, 2014

My 13 year old daughter really wanted to come here, so we took the subway from Manhattan and arrived just before the 10am opening and arrival of many school groups. The zoo is free on Wednesdays, but TA reviews mentioned that it is often very crowded on those days, so we came on a Tuesday, especially since the forecast for Wednesday was rainy (and it did rain). The zoo is a bit pricey, and extras for the Monorail, Jungle world and Gorilla world add up, but I didn't mind paying since I am all for supporting wild life and educating the public. My favorite exhibit was Gorilla world. It was priceless to see a gorilla nursing her infant. The monorail is fun, but wildlife doesn't always cooperate with viewing, and you can get a more close up view of the animals at their separate exhibits. Jungle world with its monkeys and bats was also worth the extra admission cost. We are fast walkers and saw all the outdoor exhibits we wished, including giraffes, elephants, lions, and bears. Total visit was just over 3 hours. By lunchtime, the zoo was quite crowded with school groups, so I can't imagine how crowded Wednesdays would be. The grounds are lovely, especially on the beautiful spring day we visited. We didn't eat lunch here, instead we enjoyed it at the fantastic Grand Central Station food court. I do recommend this if you enjoy zoos, but I doubt we'll return on our next visit to NYC

“Best Zoo in NYC, not sure about the entire US though”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 14, 2014

I'd seen this a few times in NYC most notably on the trip I took to Bronx with my mother last September. This zoo is amongst other things better than the Central Park Zoo, and much larger than the other mini-zoos in the other boroughs. The layout of it is such that it is a park layout with a decent selection of animals most of whom are housed not in cages but in a setting that is reflective of their native environments. Not having been to the world famous San Diego Zoo but have having been to the Washington National Zoo, I don't know that this is the best Zoo in the entire US. If you are touring NYC, it is a place to visit if you have adequate time, if you live in NYC or the surrounding suburbs, it is the first Zoo you should visit in the NYC area.

We are middle-aged couple, but we love the Bronx Zoo and visit it almost every year. Terrific!
Definitely one of the best in USA.
