Owner description: Founded in 1974, this modern art gallery is well-known for a highly unusual, permanent display by conceptual artist Walter De Maria. De Maria's work is a massive display of a 2 foot layer of dirt!

“Truly a gem!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 16, 2013

Loved everything about Dia: Beacon - the beauty of the art, the spaces, the serenity, the concentration of ONE artist per space instead of juggling it all up, the relaxed atmosphere and the relative peace and quiet. This is truly great art IF you like conceptual and/or abstract and /or minimalist art. (I do!) Only point of critique is the restaurant - it's a bit drabbish.Give it a try and you may surprise yourself. Tip: don't miss the magnificent Michael Heizer artworks. Thanks Dia!!!

“Great space for art”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 7, 2013

Huge rooms (I wanted to roller skate!) filled with thought-provoking art.

I like minimalist art, but I don't pretend to really understand it, and the artist statements often make me suspect a certain level of, er, inflation. But I really enjoyed walking through these galleries - artists I know and those I didn't, different media, great light etc.

Sometimes the people walking through the space were as interesting as the art.

The outdoor spaces were pleasant, the café had some good choices of food and drink, good gift shop, and it's conveniently located to a metronorth station and the highway (with a shuttle to the station if you don't want to walk perhaps half a mile), nice riverfront setting.

“Amazing space to view exciting modern art.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 6, 2013

The museum is inspiring and beautiful. The only other modern museum to date that rivals Dia Beacon is Mass Moca. They both have massive spaces to present works that could not be presented otherwise. Dia's most interesting works include installations from Sol Lewitt, Robert Ryman, Robert Smithson and Andy Warhol.

After you have taken in the art, step outside into the beautiful outdoor space including an installation at the adjacent pier on the river.

You either need to love very modern art, or enjoy making fun of it! Extensive collection in an interesting format. Good for a day off trip.

“worth the trip”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 3, 2013

This huge modern art museum is definitely worth a trip. Much of the art is massive in size and this place has the space to exhibit such art as it should be seen. Be sure to wear comfortable shoes!
