“Great game viewing”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 10, 2013

We stayed three nights at Kwara and enjoyed all the activities on offer. The tent was very comfortable although we had a few minor issues with the hot water . The problems were, however, sorted out promptly. The only criticism of our tent was that there was very little shade over it compared to the others and as a consequence during the hot afternoons we were unable to rest due to the heat. We had a great guide,Master and a great tracker, Master. They got a long well and were extremely knowledgeable and interesting. A lot of laughs were had by all in our vehicle. We particularly enjoyed the afternoon boat cruise and the mokoro outing followed by a walking safari. A highlight was seeing four male lions at very close range and we were lucky to see a varied range of animals. There was plenty of good quality food and lovely camp staff to look after our every need. Not total luxury but an overall exceptional experience.

Room Tip: Try to get a tent with shade during the hot months

Ever sit ten feet away from five male lions on a dark starry night and hear them roar? It is a part of out trip I will never forget. My heart was pounding several times during our time at Kwara Camp. The camp staff was great the sightings were outstanding. The Delta creates a lush green setting which was not what we were used to during our 3 week trip. We were close enough to see the water drip from the lions as they took a drink! Master and KB were a great trackers and guides. We had many upclose experiences with lions, elephants, and of course the resident hippos. One evening we had an airboat ride to watch the sun set while we watched thousands of birds land on a local island. We also had a canoe ride while we were poled passed the hippo in the laggon. The walk with Master to see the termite hills upclose was a great extra of the trip. We loved this place! The tents were comfortable, and the staff was very attentive and friendly.

Staff was very good and friendly. Lots of great game viewing. My favorite tracker of my trip, Mustah, worked here… he was lots of fun and had a great sense of humor!

While I landed, there were two male lions hanging out right next to the landing strip! Surprisingly, the plane didn’t scare them off at all. They just watched us like they were watching TV. We got good views of giraffe, ostrich, wild dogs, water buffalo, lions, zebra, wildebeast, elephants, baboons, wide variety of large birds, hyenas, jackals, cheetah and even porcupine.

Food was pretty good. Service was very good. Guides and trackers were both very knowledgeable and personable.

The accommodations at Kwara were by far the most Spartan of my four camps. I knew this in advance, but I overlooked this because of the excellent game viewing reputation. Not that the rooms were substandard, but they really do need a facelift. One thing I did not understand… the staff made a point of telling you to always lock your doors because of baboons, yet there was only a lock on the outside, not the inside! (I propped one of my bags against the door at night). The canvas tents have seen much better days. This would be a prime camp if it were to be refurbished like its sister camp, Lagoon Camp (my final destination).

Luckily, the room conditions did not diminish my enjoyment much. I still had a great time at Kwara. If like me, game viewing is your primary objective and you can overlook a lesser level of accommodation, Kwara still very much worth your time! Search photo site smugmug for "taxguyla" and check the safari gallery or contact me for the exact address for pictures and videos of my trip including videos of the rooms at my four camps (Trip Advisor wont let me leave the exact address here). Hope this review helps you out. Joe

excellent well trained and knowledgeable staff and guides make this a really memorable place. Great game with birds on every tree. Just magical.
The tent we had was one of the older ones but more than adequate. As this camp is solar powered there is no electricity in the tents but who needs it unless you Want to dry your hair!
Good food and a very fine team spirit amongst the staff made this one of the top stay in our trip. Will go again when we can.

We did a 6 night Kwando safari, Where we stayed 3 nights a Kwara camp and 3 nights in Tau Pan camp. Both were AMAZING!

Kwara- was a little more rustic as the "rooms" were actually tents and the showers were outdoors. The game drives were incredible, but having options to go out on a couple boat trips made the days less repetitive. Lots of Cheetahs, lions ( lots of different "families") so many birds ( we saw 89 types) elephants, giraffes, zebras, crocodiles, springboks, warthogs, hyenas & hippos!!!! Night drives are available ( because it is a private reserve), we did 3, but not very much was ever seen when we did a night drive.

Tau Pan- Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful place. The rooms were incredible! Indoor or outdoor showers. Very spacious and clean. The game is not a plentiful, but the birds were pretty amazing. They have restrictions when you can be in the park which is pretty much 7am- 7pm.
Sunsets were awesome, especially on the deck around the fire pit. You will never feel like you are in a "camp" while you are here!

The food at both camps was the same. VERY VERY good! Wine and liquor were plentiful!!!

Room Tip: Bring a head lamp!!!!

Our stay at Kwara, Lagoon and Nxai Pan December 2012 was Fabulous.

Kwara Camp:
We stayed at Kwara for 3 days. Wonderful! Guide George and his tracker were really great. The cooperation between kwara and little kwara, (guide Hobbs) loved it! We have seen a lot of beautiful sights. 3 cheetahs hunting and killing..(brrrr). But also the general game drives were so nice !
The camp is a real African bush camp, never change that, we don’t need internet, tv, airco etc...we are in the bush!!!! Mozes and Hilde thanks for the hospitality, we enjoyed it very much !
Lagoon Camp:
Our guide Bali and tracker Elmo (almost a guide) were great. But also the new cars, and we were so happy that we had the car for 3 days with the 4 of us…that’s was really super ! We didn’t had time to write in the guestbook, so sorry, that’s why we want to leave a message over here.

The camp is beautiful, the rooms to large , the food...not always that good, the staff very friendly. The guides and trackers where super ! The whole atmosphere was so friendly.

Tracking the wild dogs, finding the wild dogs, To go on a hunt with the wild dogs...to see the killings …..man o man..this was an adventure. Guide Bali and Elmo..they found the tracks, guide Spencer found the wild dogs...21 wild dogs. We were so lucky, we saw and followed the dogs for 3 days !!!
But also the morning drive to Lebala, it was so beautiful, the meeting with Charles the manager from Lebala, so spontaneous , and then later in the afternoon, the rain, the thunder and lightning, but…no not going back to the camp…they tracked the wild dogs , so…there we go again, (like in the movie Jurassic park….:-), we loved our days at lagoon!
Nxai Pan Camp:
Beautiful, the area is lovely, beautiful sundown….a lot off Elephants, hunting cheetahs, beautiful trip to Baines Baobab, honey badger, lions etc.
We love tracking, we love to go off road, Nxai Pan, National Park is beautiful but we missed the exciting off tracking….

Overall our staying at the Kwando Camps were super, good organization, the food not always that good, but for us no problem, because the new vehicles, the guides and trackers, the staff…. made that we had an unforgettable safari !
Thanks for that!

We came to Kwara after a 6 day safari at a private safari park in SA. Our Kwara experience was phenomenal. The hospitality is unmatched anywhere - at every level. Beds are very comfortable and they really do get the tents free of mosquitos. Our guide TJ and tracker Tito were unbelievable in their energy, knowledge and willingness to follow animals anytime of the day. They truly gave us a total immersion experience and allowed time to truly observe these extraordinary animals and their environment. Food is superlative (be warned, you are fed 6 times a day! and will become "traditional" if you stay too long), there is an open bar. We enjoyed meeting guests from other countries and especially liked having our guides dining along with us. The whole staff is wonderful, open and sharing. Cannot recommend more highly!
