“Nxabega: not perfect - but close!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 10, 2012

My wife and I experienced the hospitality of this wonderful camp for 2 nights in mid-September 2012. We had just come for the luxuries of Sabi Sabi in the Kruger the Royal Livingston Hotel at "the Falls" and Savute Safari Lodge (review elsewhere) and approached the tented camp with some degree of trepidation and excitement. We were headed to Xaranna after this sojourn -more on this later.

We were blown away by the welcome, the food, the care and attention of the staff, the flexibility to fit in with our requirements and wishes and the comfort of the whole camp. To call this a mere tented camp is some understatement! The main lodge is beautifully decorated and homely in its comforts. The ensuited "tents" were more than we could have wished for - down to the complementary ice-box with drinks provided at your request.

From the sunset mokoro ride on our first afternoon (finishing with sundowners in the most idyllic of settings) to the last game drive our stay here was fantastic. Our guide and tracker (Bee and TT) were expert in their efforts to show us what the area had to offer. I've seen other reports that were dissappointed in the game on offer - we observed a multitude of elephants, giraffe, impala, Red Lewche, hippos, monkeys, baboons and even a crocodile. A highlight was when Bee tracked a leopard back to its kill and we sat entralled for nearly an hour until it tired of us and climbed a tree with a very full belly for a snooze!

Would I recommend Nxabega - absolutely! Would I return - Absolutely!

This is a beautiful and diverse location with opportunities to see wildlife by jeep and by dugout canoe. Although not the right location to see vast herds of mammals, we saw an incredible range of birds, and some bachelor elephants, small groups of zebras and - the highlight - a leopard with her cub. Our visit was in March, which might explain the contradictory comments. The staff were, as at all andBeyond locations, committed to the success of our holiday. I am a vegetarian, and they worked hard to keep my meals interesting and varied. We plan to return in 2013.

We spent 3 nights in this beautiful tented camp during our honey moon.
Truth to be told the we were quite over demanding due to the high cost of room x night.
When we arrived at Pom Pom airport we have been picked up by 2 rangers for the first game drive to the camp. In 2 hours we saw zebras, elephants, impalas, cocrodiles, cudus, giraffes....
Once arrived at the camp we received the welcome from all the staff members.
The tent, 50 meters far from the living area, was gorgeous considering that it is a tented room. High level fornitures , clean and very comfortable.
The camp is in the middle of the wild bush and during the night elephants and other animals used to come to our tent to have a lunch with the trees close to us. It has been a great experience.
The staff was great. There was a dedicated person to us ( Mareku) and she was able to promptly answer to all our requests and needs.
The breakfast ( early in the morning) , the brunch ( late morning ) , the afternoon light lunch were upstanding. Fresh and organic food , home made bakery products and fresh juices.
All the details were perfectly checked and managed.
The dinner, setted everyday in a different location, was terrific! The best food we have ever tasted in Africa.
Everything cooked by a different chef everyday. So each day different "touch".

Overall it has been one of the best experiances we had in our life, we have never had such kind of treatment neither in "releis chateaux hotels " nor " leading hotels of the world".
Everything was managed with passion and it was clear that staff was really careing about us.
It was an unforgettable dream.
Thank you to all the staff !

JUNE 2012, This was our third visit to this lovely lodge, but our first in Botswana's winter. Undoubtedly there is more game in October to April than in June, but we still saw lions, leopards and many beautiful birds. The lodge is less expensive that Xaranna or Xudum, but provides really good value I prefer this lodge to all the other & Beyond Lodges in the Delta. Great food and the most delicious brunch with really nice tented bedrooms, and fabulous service from everyone. The manager could not do enough and our butler and guide were first class. Lovely little pool, and a nice lodge area, the welcome back after the evening game drive is special, roaring fires, flowing wine and lovely food......WE.WILL.BE.BACK...............

Room Tip: For me any of the ones further out, but non of them are so close to other tents that you do not feel...

We were booked in for 4 nights and moved out after 2. We moved because there was very little game to see. I realise that we may have just been unlucky but no one else in the camp was seeing anything much and the guides when you asked them said that nothing much was around and they didn't expect there to be any change. The camp itself was tired and in need of renovation. Light shades were cracked and broken and festooned with cobwebs. Floors had been patched where they had rotted out. There were nasty looking stains on the tent canvas and the steps and deck of our tent were covered with dirt and sand when we arrived and not swept or cleaned while we were there. The food was fine and the staff were okay but not particularly interested. The landing strip near the camp apparently hasn't been used in years and it is a 2 hour dusty drive from Pom Pom airstrip.
And beyond did the right thing and moved us to Xaranna. Xaranna was wonderful but the amazing improvement in the standard of accommodation, with much more game and even better scenery unfortunately made Nxabega seem even worse.

We arrived at Nxabega after staying at &Beyond's Moremi camp, which was quite the amazing wildlife experience. Upon arrival in Nxabega, we drove two hours with Max and Flame (great tour guides although Max needed a little time to warm up) to the camp (they really need to fix that airstrip which is 5 minutes from the camp). Unfortunately, our time in Nxabega almost took a turn for the worse when we discovered my backpack with my glasses, electronics, etc., was missing. With a heavy heart we tried to enjoy the rest of the day while the staff tried to locate it. At about 9:00PM that night we received word that the bag was found! Apparently it had fallen off the truck by the airstrip and one of the staff had driven back to look for it and found it in the bush at night! Needless to say, we were very relieved (word to the wise, make sure any small bags are securely packed in the truck). The next day involved more aquatic sightseeing, which was a nice change from the safaris we had previously been on. As was the case at all of the &Beyond camps, the food was very good and prepared well. My only complaint was there were a decent amount of bugs in the bathroom, but TIA afterall. Well, that and I also woke up our last morning there with severe diarrhea (I have a feeling I may have drank some water in the shower - my wife was perfectly fine so I don't believe it was the food), but the staff was able to rearrange our flights for us so I had some time to recover (thankfully).

Nxabega was the last camp we used on our Zambia and Botswana vacation. The camp has nine large, well-spaced, en-suite tents each on a raised platform with a deck overlooking the Okavango wetlands. The camp was a fairly long drive from the airstrip but that drive was made into a safari by our guide and we stopped for a picnic lunch, so the drive turned into an advantage. By almost any standard, this is a great camp. The variety of habitats make for diverse and plentiful wildlife. The staff was outstanding and the facilities and food were spot on. Dave and Megan, the camp managers, were wonderful hosts and made us feel like part of the family. Our guide was probably the most knowledgeable and skilled as any we had on the trip. Overall, this camp gave us the a terrific experience and i recommend it highly, without reservation. If there is a negative to this camp it is the distance from the airstrip but we were told that a new airstrip is being built just minutes from the camp, so that becomes a a nonproblem.

Room Tip: Each tent has its own charm.
