“fantastic gameviewing”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 22, 2008

The rooms are of a good size decorated in traditional african style and from our window we looked out over the chobe river. The food and drink was good and varied served by friendly and helpfull staff. The game viewing is OUTSTANDING ,on our first day we saw impala, hippo cape buffalo, elephants (too many to count ) wart hog and leopard. Our guide was Tracy who handled our 4x4 like an expert and was full of infomation on the area and the wildlife, spotting animals long before we could see them. This was our first safari and we was'nt sure how close animals came , we soon realised they came very close indeed so some great photo's are easily taken. The game drives start early in the morning then its back for breakfast, we then did a river safari spotting crocs ,fish eagles , hippo's and even an elephant swimming the river to get to the Namibian side.We got back to the lodge for a superb lunch and a hour or so free time then was served high tea before setting off again to see more elephants, buffalo, lion, and many more animals. After a sundowner drink in the bush we returned back to the lodge for a shower, change and a well deserved drink and a beatifull dinner.Because the lodge is in the gamepark you do not have to drive to spot the wildlife - as soon as you drive out of the lodge you start seeing animals. We will never forget our time here, the staff, the sunsets and most of all the game.

Lovely stay at Chobe Game Lodge! Great food, nice spacious rooms and a good bar and restaurant service. Great views over the Zambezi. Good game drives. Our guide Obi was worth her weight in gold!

We travelled to Chobe with a group of 36 people on an incentive through our company. Chobe is very impressive, and even on the driveway up to the lodge we spotted all sorts of wildlife - elephants, giraffe, impala. The lodge is very nice and authentic to Africa. The rooms are nice and we were lucky enough to be upgraded to a suite with private pool. Food, entertainment and grounds are all 1st class. The views across the Chobe river are breathtaking with lots of wildlife to be seen from the viewing deck in the grounds. Unfortunately we had some issues with the hotel which didn't entirely spoil our stay but we were disappointed to say the least. The hotel did not inform us on booking the trip that their main pool was under refurbishment and that guests had to use one of the suite pools instead (which was tiny). All the main pool area was screened off. We were also slightly miffed to find that the hotel staff had told other guests that they could use the pool adjoined to our suite which was a bit of a shock when we got back to the room!! The other issue was that items went missing from ours and other guests rooms such as sunglasses, fashion jewellery, toiletries and clothing. At first we all thought we were going a bit mad thinking that we had misplaced stuff but it soon became apparent that this was not the case as it was all to frequent. The hotel are investigating as I understand but they were not very forthcoming at the time. Hopefully it will be sorted out and maybe the items will get returned. But for travellers going to this hotel please don't be put off as it is lovely - just make sure you put all valuables in the safe! The safari's from the lodge are fantastic and you won't be disappointed with the wildlife it is in abundance.

Stayed at Chobe Game Lodge, march 19th - 22th 2008. We were meet by Matilda who is such a wonderful person explaining us everything. Matilda is also the person who give you a call at 05.30 in the morning so that you are ready for your morning gamedrive at 06.00. She also come to your table during dinner to hear if everything is ok and can help you out if you need any kind of help. - Our room 410 was so lovely with a fantastic view to Chobe River and Namibia. The border goes in the middle of the river. - From the moment we arrived we treated with service that was above 5 Star. We had 2 very nice person's serving us: Cha and Ghama. The food is so delicios and you have several things to choose from. In the kitchen there are several young trainee's: Nkosi, Charles, Baps, Sego, Kefilwe,Matengu, lovely people. I talked with them a lot and we were joking (lot's of fun). Be sure if you go on a safari to stay at Chobe Game Lodge at least 2-4 days, you won't regret it. - First gamedrive in the morning from 6 am to about 8.30 am then you have breakfast. Then you are on a riverboat from 10.30 - 12.30 then you have lunch. Then we needed a rest. At 4 pm you could have a tea or coffee before your gamedrive at 4.30 pm. We usely were back around 7.15 pm. Dinner started at 7.30 but you could take your time, taking a shower. - Our gamedrives were fantastic.
At one of the gamedrives we saw a dead elefant at the edge of the river and 2 lion's (male + female) was lieing there. All sudden the female lion walk's down and start's to eat from the elefant. In the river there was a crocodile waiting for food and in a few dead trees the vultures were waiting . We were so close to the animals. On the way back to the lodge we saw in the distant's a big male elefant in rut who were angry running down the dusty road towards us, so we just had to back up quickly and disappear. I did zoom in on my videocamera and have some moments there, wow. We've also seen lot's of elefant's, impala, puku, waterbuck, kudu, waterbuffalo, crocodiles, hippo, giraffe, serval, baboon's, fish eagles, birds etc.......
The guides know just everything, so just ask..... We loved it so much so we want to go back. We recomment this place highly, if you want the best: food, beatifyl breath-taking scenery, high cleanliness and comfort, the staff's personallity and the game viewing was tremendous.

What was not to love about this hotel? Great location, friendly staff, lovely size rooms with terraces, excellent food, great game drives and boat trips on the Chobe River with very knowledgeable staff. Guest relations very helpful in confirming our transfers etc. All inclusive means exactly that, with the exception of a few premium alcohol brands - all meals, early morning coffee and snacks, afternoon tea, bar, mini-bar and best of all - laundry service!!

No TV but then that's not what you come to a game reserve for. They have Doom in the rooms but I did think a plug-in insect repellant would have been a good idea. Bathrooms were a bit small. Minor quibbles in an otherwise excellent stay.

I will post pictures soon but had to write immediately to say that after staying at both Chobe Safari Lodge and Chobe Game Lodge during the same week, CHOBE GAME LODGE GETS THE NOD BY FAR!

Great food (enjoy Boma night where dinner is served on the lawn and the whole area is lit up with torches,) fantastic game viewing thanks to my amazing guide Florence (Ellies galore but so much more - I even saw wild dogs ripping apart a kudu for dinner - sounds gruesome but it was AMAZING to watch), fantastic massages by Chido. Overall the Lodge has the friendliest, most helpful staff who made me feel like a much-loved return guest from the moment I arrived (though I was a new guest.) I even loved those 5:45 am wake up calls from Irene because I knew what was coming next: 6am coffee before the game drive at 6:30 am!

  • Disliked — Can't think of anything I didn't enjoy...

This was my second stay during a two week long photo safari visit to Africa. I was supposed to have stayed at Chobe Savanna Lodge, but because of the heavy rains this season hasd to be robooked into the game lodge.

The hotel was immaculate, service was fantastic, and the location, right inside the Reserve and on the Chobe River was really fantastic. That said, I had been staing at smaller more intimate camps, and this hotel, with a 125 guest capacity, was more touristy than I was looking for with a lot of European and American tour groups coming in and out. The hotel seemed to cater to older travelers as well-- the average age here must have been about 65 years or so.

The hotel does a great job of handling the coming and goings and there seems to be a fairly high number of staff per person here and for the most part they are fairly friendly.

The food was good, not great, and was cruise ship type buffets for the most part, and they attempted to incorporate local cuisine whenever possible.

The rooms were very clean, but a bit dated, My main complaint was the shower. They used a water saving shower head that sprayed all over, and only a European-style glass shower door that only went a quarter of the length of the tub, so the whole bathroom was flooded after every shower.

The real treat was the game drives and pontoon cruises up the Chobe River. We really saw some spectacular wildlife including elephants and lions stalking prey. The main drawback was that whenever there was good sighting there must have been at least 10 SUV's there. That was because of the location (right inside the Gate) a lot of the tour companies from town were there as well.

So I think that it was a great hotel, the game was great, but if your looking for something more personal and with a less touristy feel, look at smaller tented camps or lodges in the southern part of Botswana with maybe a two-night visit here on your way.

  • Liked — The location and game drives.
  • Disliked — It was a little too touristy.
