“A lovely haven you won't want to leave”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 3, 2008

Gill, Gideon and their staff had thought of everything to make our stay complete.
We had a lovely big room. The view from the balcony was great. We only caught glimpses of whales in the distance but in season they apparently come very close to Cliff Lodge.
As everyone else has said we wish we'd had more time to stay here longer.
Fin and Murphy took us for great a walk along the fabulous Walker beach.
We would definitely like to return and would recommend it to any one wanting to get away for a few days, or longer, to relax in a beautiful and unspoilt location.
The food in the local Whales and Dolphins restaurant was fabulous too.

The Cliff Lodge is a real find. Gideon and Gill who run it have created a really relaxed but superb place where you can totally relax. The rooms are lovely (the suite on the top floor is absolutely wonderful!) and the breakfasts huge and really nice. The whole feeling is that you're at home, even down to borrowing their two dogs to walk on the beach if you want to. Nothing was too much trouble for them or their staff and we loved every second.

Outside the lodge, the beaches on the Walker Bay nature reserve are white sand and deserted. We couldn't understand why they weren't packed with people, but had the place to ourselves for days. The lodge provides binoculars and scopes for free too, so we ended up seeing whales (very late in the season so we were really lucky) and loads of other wildlife.

It's really quiet, so we'd recommend this for couples who want to get away from it all and enjoy the wonderful views / beaches around there. The views of the whales in season must be phenomenal.

If we had one downside, it was that there aren't many restaurants around but the ones we went to were good - two nice ones within walking distance but then you have to drive to find others. Not necessarily a problem, but one of you has to refrain from too much of the gorgeous wine.

We'll be going back very soon!

We have just returned to the UK after spending a month travelling around the Western Cape in South Africa - and by far our favourite place was the Cliff Lodge in De Kelders, next to Gansbaai.

Such an incredible location, with breathtaking views of the ocean, cliffs and the whales! The accommodation was perfect, everything we could possibly need, they had thought of! And breakfasts were just wonderful, on the deck with fresh coffee, fruit, pancakes, bacon... watching the Right Whales swim past with their calves. Just magic.

Gideon, Gill, Finn & Murphy were the perfect hosts, and had even booked us into restaurants when we arrived. Our first night we went to 'Kloofs @ home' just up the road, and had one of the best meals in our whole month in SA. So good we went back the next night too!

I just wish we could have spent more than 2 nights here - it really was idyllic and nothing could be faulted. I hope we dont' have to wait too long to go back.

  • Liked — Location, hospitality, quality
  • Disliked — that we only had 2 nights there!! Could have stayed for much longer

Cliff Lodge was a beautiful place to stay on our honeymoon and Gill and Gideon were great hosts. This was one of my favourite spots on our SA trip and I wished we'd stayed for more than 2 nights!

The penthouse suite is enormous with full windows of glass looking right out over the sea and across the dunes of the nearby beach. You can whale watch from your very, very comfy bed, or curl up on the Chaise with a telescope in the living room. The room is calming and romantic (the double ended bath, lovely toiletries and big fluffy towels were particularly nice) and we loved the champagne Gill had ready for us when we arrived. Great minibar and lovely, lovely breakfasts. In fact, I could live in Cliff Lodge quite happily.....

We'd intended to get out and explore the Overberg while we spent a couple of days in de Kelders - but somehow we couldn't quite get ourselves off our large balcony.... The whalewatching from the hotel is quite splendiforous. We watched whale calves with their mothers breaching just a few hundred yards off shore.

de Kelders (just outside of Gansbaai) is really quiet and laid back and much, much more beautiful than Hermanus. Excellent whale boat trips from Gansbaai too.

If you want a bit of luxury (and great views) while in the Overberg I couldn't recommend this place more.

We were ment to stay for 2 nights, but could not resist another night. We only wish we had had more time. A fantastic B&B. Spectacular location, wonderful rooms, great attentive service. We would go back without hesitation. The view from the day bed in the ocean front suite is amazing. Such a relaxing place to spend a few days at, we could not fault it. Do not stay in Hermanus, far to commercial. We did the shark diving and eco boat trip and really enjoyed them, and it is only ten minutes down the road from Cliff Lodge.

The perfect place to stay - our favourite in our travels of the world. We stayed in 2005 and returned in 2006. Unparalelled for accommodation, service, hospitality, and of course location - as close as you'll get to viewing whales from the land anywhere in the world. Forget Hermanus (the better known location just around the bay) and come here. The guesthouse is immaculate - small enough to be personal, but also respectful of your privacy. Thanks to Gideon & Gill for making such a fantastic place to stay.
