“Excellent Excursion”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 22, 2013

I had heard and read bad stories about companies offering whale viewing trips, so approached this trip with trepidation.
However, my experience of this company was very positive.
On arrival you are efficiently checked in and then enjoy cake and coffee during your briefing.
There is also a brief interesting talk about the penguins of Dyer Island - you can even buy a penguin home for just a few pounds - A bargain and well worthwhile!
You put on your safety gear then off to the boat. The boat is modern, small enough to get close to the whales and large enough to feel safe.
It was quite rough close to shore on our visit, but the crew swiftly took us through the rough sea to find a calmer spot. Some people were ill, but two of the crew were very helpful and considerate with their attention and attempts to make the people more comfortable.
The boat has a top deck and a lower deck for different perspectives - I tried both but actually preferred the lower deck (it is a lot steadier here for photography)
Very soon after leaving the immediate coast we saw Southern Right Whales both very near (next to the boat) and about 100 ft away. It was fascinating to watch the interaction between the female and the males who were trying to mate. We saw briefly a White shark as we neared a Shark Diving boat, and the Sea lions swimming around and laying on the islands.
To be honest, the day we went was not ideal conditions for whale watching - windy and wet, but the enthusiasm, knowledge and professionalism of all the crew soon made you forget the weather. They all worked hard to make sure we had a great experience seeing the whales from different angles and explaining in an interesting and fun way the behaviour and biology the whales.
Back on dry land, complimrentary hot soup and sandwiches are offered to warm you up and of course you can buy a download of the film of your drip.
Despite having wobbly legs for a few hours after arriving back on dry land, I thoroughly enjoyed the whale watching excursion and thoroughly recommend Dyer Island Cruises.

“Avoid whale watching excursion if you don't wish to spend considerable time watching shark cage divers”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed October 29, 2013

This potentially fabulous whale watching trip is spoilt by:

Crew not rotating passengers.
Only half the passengers can be on the top deck at a time and despite three separate whale sightings passengers were not rotated until the boat left to watch shark cage divers and even then some guests were allowed by the crew to continue on the top deck despite others not having had the opportunity.

Incorrect marketing or the crew going "off plan".
Whilst of course weather limitations and natural sightings are subject to nature, almost half of the excursion which is advertised as whale watching was spent stationary next to three shark cage boats watching humans getting in and out of cages and one very brief shark sighting in this setting.

I am not a regular user of trip advisor but wish I had been as I would have seen Sue B's entry of 2 Jan 2013 and avoided the trip. With regards to the reply to this we were indeed asked to sign an indemnity form prior to the trip. In addition the reply states the company is a whale and ecotrip company but the crew are certainly enthusiastic and focused on spending a significant proportion of the trip watching shark cages.

If you want to watch cage diving and whales this might be a good "2 in 1" trip but if you are after just wildlife the avoid.

Apologies for not meeting your expectations. We specialize in Marine Big 5 safari's ( Whales, Sharks, Seals, Dolphins & Penguins) & try to show as many of these animals to our guests. Our main focus are the whales during whale season, but we do still make time to see some of the other wildlife in the area, such as that around the incredible Dyer Island ecosystem.

Kind regards,

Sanchia

“Small boat but close look to the whale”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 11, 2013

We did get very close to the whales and also see the dolphins as well. The boat is small, so be prepared to endure the tough sea. I think half of the people on the boat ended up throwing up as the sea was really rough the day we went in. If you are prone to sea sickness, be warned.
However, if you are ok with rough sea, you are able to see spectacular whales, plus thousands of seals (they are stink though).
The warm soup at the end was what we needed.

“Excellent excursion”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 4, 2013 via mobile

A very slick operation - lovely crew, welcome coffees, and boat perfect for viewing. We saw several southern right whales, one of which swam right up to the boat close enough to touch. Headed to shark alley to see the hundreds of seals playing in the water and noisily chattering whilst crowding together on the rocks, and finally ... The humpback whale, spotted by our tracker at 2.5 kilometres away. Hot soup and sandwiches ready on our return. A brilliant experience :)

“Well organised outfit”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 2, 2013

Fully recommend this whale watching tour for the following reasons: -

Well organised, processed people & payments quickly.
Ratio of staff on board was high (12 guests, 4 staff members).
Return soup to warm up, was just what was needed.
Modern company providing dropbox link to video if purchased (keeping costs down).
Fund raising talk at the beginning was non-obtrusive.

Plus we saw a load of animals (whales, shark, seals, penguins).
