Owner description: The owner and founder Brian McFarlane is a professional diver and skipper who has always made a living from the sea. He started diving for perlemoen (abalone) at a young age, then moved on to become a commercial fisherman for 6 years and spent another 6 years diving in search of wrecks along the southern coast of Africa. This was followed by the diving for diamonds from the sea bed for the next 20 years. He has become a local legend with his fascinating tales about the sea and underwater experiences. During the timewhen Great White Shark fishing was allowed, Brian caught Great Whites, some weighing more than 1 ton.Today, he dearly regrets this and now spends his time and efforts in finding the great beasts to be observedand photographed at close range. Brian has worked with the Great Whites for 18 years, and has only had6 non-sighting days in the last 10 years.

“Pretty awesome!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 14, 2012 via mobile

We joined Brian and his crew on our first cage shark diving experience yesterday. It is something that once you have done it, you feel like you have really had a once in a lifetime experience. The crew was super nice and very patient. Brian has also worked with the Discovery Channel for Shark Week, so you can be sure that you are sailing with a quality outfit. He let's you stay down in the cage until you have really experienced the Great Whites up close an personal! I would recommend Brian McFarlane and his crew to everyone.

“So good I went twice!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 13, 2012

I was in Cape Town for a work trip and decided to stay a few extra days to go shark diving. I booked a transfer with this company from my hotel in Cape Town down to Gansbaii. I actually booked my trip through sharkbookings.com and got lucky enough to end up with this company. I had such a blast the first day I actually went back the next day for a second trip. Even though March isn't the ideal time to visit we saw a ton of sharks, big ones included. On the second day after we were done diving we went past Seal Island and even saw some penguins. Breakfast was provided and after a safety briefing you board the boat and you're on your way. I can't say enough great things about Brian McFarlane and his entire team. They're all so helpful and professional- it really makes for a great experience. They have a direct website as well: http://www.sharkcagediving.net/

“Incredible experience with nice people”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 8, 2012 via mobile

Very nice ambient with the crew and the other people. They respect the sharks and transmits love to them. They welcome you with a breakfast, you can eat and drink during the trip and at arrival you get a hot soup. The experience is incredible and the service too.

“A once in a lifetime experience.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 5, 2012

There is so much choice in this Gaansbaai, who to choose to go shark diving with, but if you choose Great White Shark Tours you will not be disappointed. Brian Mc Farlane, the skipper of the boat certainly knows his stuff when it comes to sharks, he is great with people and loves to talk about his passion.... Great Whites.

Great White Shark Tours are an organised and professionally run company, they are very prompt to reply to e mails and organise your shark diving trip for you. But be aware book early as places do fill up quickly, I would recommend allowing two days of your holiday for diving just in case weather is bad on one of those days- so avoiding disappointment.

You can either arrive in Kleinbaai by yourself or book on the companies transport, which arrived on time and takes approximately two hours from Cape Town. When you arrive you are welcomed with a continental breakfast, whilst you pay for the trip. Then you are given a comprehensive safety briefing of which Great White Shark Tours has a fifteen year unblemished safety record.

From there you head down to the boat- The Apex Predator, is a high tech catamaran, this boat can take 40 people without feeling crowded.

Once anchored, the great whites started circling the boat almost immediately and although you are likely to see them at any time of the year, peak season is from May-September and on a clear day the visibility is amazing. We were provided with all good quality gear and equipment including a 7mm wetsuit needed for the cold water and towels for after diving. As soon as the sharks arrive the first eight divers got in the cage, you do not need any scuba experience to dive with great whites. The experience is absolutely amazing, to be surrounded by these completely wild animals is a once in a lifetime opportunity. To see them swimming all around you is wonderful. The great thing with this company is that they allow each diver and acceptable amount of time viewing the sharks (in our case twenty times past the cage each) and there is always the option to go in a second or third time if conditions allow. After your dive there are cold drinks and snacks on board.

After a few hours diving you head back to shore, warm up with some soup and have the option of buying the days DVD, we were lucky as our bus driver stopped off in Hermanus so that we could watch the whales.

If you get the chance, go with Great White Shark Tours, you will have a fun, informative and safe day out on the water learning and viewing these amazing creatures. Thanks guys for a fantastic experience- we won't forget it.

P.S don't forget you sea sickness tablets!!!!!!!!!

“This company does a good job! Look for deals.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 4, 2012

Solid experience: The crew members onboard helped us in and out of wetsuits (greatly appreciated!), kept things moving, and prepared a nice spread for breakfast and soup/coffee/tea for after we returned. We were very glad we booked with Great White Shark Tours. Be sure to look for deals: We paid 850 ZAR/person because there was a special if you stayed at a backpacker place in Hermanus. Others on our tour paid less and some paid more. Also, don't be discouraged when you find out there are like 40 people total on the boat for your tour--There is definitely room on the boat to move around and the crew was very good about giving everyone time in the water who wanted it.
