“Fabulous place to go for our first safari”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 23, 2012

We booked this trip from Australia in Jan 2012 and chose this area because of the low risk of Malaria. We were unsure which safari parks to stay at however looked at reviews on Tripadvisor so chose Amakhosi based on the reviews and they were all true.
The staff at Amakhosi lodge were fabulous and food was great.

Sam the food and beverage manager knew his wines and had a great collection considering how remote we were! Mandie and Gert and the rest of the team were also fantastic.
We also loved Mandie's pet Warthog who had just adopted a baby Warthog that day from local wild Warthog's and we were amazed how much it behaved like a pet dog!

We initially stayed in the River Suite which was great however we then moved to the Umntwana Honeymoon Suite which was much better and although we are glad we experience both if we ever go back we would stay just in the honeymoon suite.

We had Phillip as our ranger and Jeremy as our tracker and they were both fantastic. We got to see all the animals except a leopard over the course of the four days of morning and evening safari's. An amazing experience that is very unique. They were both very good at getting us up close and personal to the animals.

We also highly recommend Bronwen Delamere from Sure MAP Travel in Durban. We were sceptical about using a travel agent from so far away but she and her team at the travel agency were fantastic in helping us plan our trip schedule from the time we landed in Cape Town until we flew home and they got us some great deals at the safari parks.

Thank you very much for posting the review and so happy that you enjoyed your stay with us and for the amazingly lovely pictures you posted as well. We are also pleased that you mentioned Bronwen as she is a top rated consultant and they sometimes do not get the credit for their hard work. Hope to see you soon again. Regards The Team of Amakhosi

Stayed in Oct 2011 and this place was amazing. Food, ambience, game drives, rooms, everything was fabulous. We were upgraded to a honeymoon suite as it was my husbands 40th birthday but even without I am sure it would have been great.

Have been on a few safaris and never so close to the animals. Literally at one point we were surrounded by 3 lions less than 5 metres away each. Jeremy and Philip were phenomenal. Only disappointed at no leopard!

Only down side is its very expensive. We are used to splurging a bit but close to £500 a night was a bit painful (although in all fairness this did include all food and the game drives).

We spent 3 nights here as part of our honeymoon in the honeymoon suite and had an amazing stay. The suite was large, very well decorated with a beautiful view on to the Mkuze river, with great African bush sounds if you popped your head out during the night. Our ranger (Nick) and tracker made sure we saw the big five during our morning or late afternoon game drives and were very talented and knowledgeable. The tea breaks and sun downers during the game drives were a highlight. The high teas were a treat to look forward too and the meals were top class with excellent service. We enjoyed the local dancing that the staff did on our last night and we were very sad to leave. The bush is some of the most beautiful scenery that I have ever seen and I would recommend this place to anyone looking for an amazing safari.

my husband and i have just spent 2 nights at amakhosi and had a really great time. We have been to several other game lodges in South Africa but Amakhosi certainly is one of the best. After a long 6 hour drive from Joburg we arrived and were very impressed by the location. We had chosen the Honeymoon suite (despite being married for 26 years) the room was wonderful complete with large deck with pool overlooking the river where luckily for us a family of elephants came to drink. All the staff made us very welcome and nothing was too much trouble.Meal times were great in the beautiful outdoor dining area watching the resident hippo. Game drives were great, although perhaps not as many animals as other reserves, each drive had many highlights. High tea in the bush was just one of the memorable moments. Altogether a wonderful relaxed stay at beautiful location and great staff. Cant wait to go back

Room Tip: Choose Honeymoon suite if you can
