What the Quality Inn in Tucumcari, New Mexico, lacks in modern amenities it makes up for in enthusiastic staff. We visited on a quiet November weekend needing a king- and a two queen-room. The desk clerk cheerfully questioned me about our specific needs for microwave, access, refrigerator, wifi, etc. He was able to put us into two first floor rooms that met our needs. We found other employees at the motel to be just as accommodating and friendly. The place was born as a Holiday Inn several decades ago and has recently been sold to a new owner dedicated to upgrading it. From the outside it is welcoming, with pillared entrances, a restaurant, and rooms configured around a courtyard and pool in two stories. The dining room was open until 9 pm and there were other alternatives along Tucumcari's main drag, once a part of the historic Route 66.
Our rooms were clean and comfortable with baths a bit on the small side and too few outlets for our array of phones and electronic devices. Breakfast included the usual continental fare, plus a steam table with eggs, ham, pancakes, fried potatoes, and white gravy for your biscuits. Compared to the 100 dollar plus rooms just across the highway, we found the Quality Inn a good bargain and we would stay there again.
