“Good staff, good intentions”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 19, 2012

What the Quality Inn in Tucumcari, New Mexico, lacks in modern amenities it makes up for in enthusiastic staff. We visited on a quiet November weekend needing a king- and a two queen-room. The desk clerk cheerfully questioned me about our specific needs for microwave, access, refrigerator, wifi, etc. He was able to put us into two first floor rooms that met our needs. We found other employees at the motel to be just as accommodating and friendly. The place was born as a Holiday Inn several decades ago and has recently been sold to a new owner dedicated to upgrading it. From the outside it is welcoming, with pillared entrances, a restaurant, and rooms configured around a courtyard and pool in two stories. The dining room was open until 9 pm and there were other alternatives along Tucumcari's main drag, once a part of the historic Route 66.
Our rooms were clean and comfortable with baths a bit on the small side and too few outlets for our array of phones and electronic devices. Breakfast included the usual continental fare, plus a steam table with eggs, ham, pancakes, fried potatoes, and white gravy for your biscuits. Compared to the 100 dollar plus rooms just across the highway, we found the Quality Inn a good bargain and we would stay there again.

Room Tip: As the upgrade continues, prevail on the desk attendants for the rooms best suited to your needs and...

We travel to New Mexico every year or so to visit family, and we like the historic aura of a town that once was a major stop over on Route 66. Tucumcari is a vintage town, and the Comfort Inn is a vintage inn. But the night clerk won our hearts when a fuse blew in our room and the lights went out. She found us another room a couple doors down and loaned us a flashlight to transfer our stuff. Inconvenient, yes; but nicely handled and another travel story to entertain friends. We of course re-visited the Dinosaur Museum, where the staff is friendly and the exhibits are locally crafted.

Mattress was worn out 10 years ago. Wife was bitten by a spider. General Manager said that she had not had any complaints about the mattress and that we didn't tell the front desk person about the spider bite. No front desk person to tell. Just left the key cards and left. Been a rewards member since 2003 and presently at Elite Gold level but this is the last straw with Choice Hotels. Best bet is to just skip Tucumcari. The whole town has seen better days.

The front desk personnel were very accommodating and friendly.
Upon opening the door to our room - it smelled great -- was very clean and had everything we needed.
We had an excellent and very reasonably priced dinner in the restaurant. The breakfast was better than most all the other "free" breakfasts at our other stops and the dining room attendant was busy the entire time we were in there -- making sure everything was full and the tables were clean.
Will stop there next year on our annual trip for sure.

This place is a disaster, and that's being kind. It's dirty, it smells, the only soda machine didn't work. We waited 20 minutes to just check in, then got the only room with a king bed available. The front desk person should find a new career, this one exceeds her ability. The maids need to learn how to clean a room. The WiFi connection failed all the time, and when it worked it was very slow. The owner clearly couldn't care about service or providing a hotel room that even meets minimum standards.

We didn't like anything about this hotel. Old and dirty rooms. Hairdryer was missing, The room was supposed to have a microwave - it didn't. The TV and channel selection were very poor and I couldn't keep internet connection for more than a few minutes at a time. Not close to any eating places, and a very limited menu at the hotel. Very overpriced as far as hotels go. Would never stay there again and we are really starting to wonder about the Choice Hotel chain...

We are traveling back home from being on vacation for 8 days. I looked up lots of reviews on trip advisor and hotels.com on the way here. TA reviews were decent for this hotel and it was a pretty good price ($69) for hot breakfast and a heated pool. The kids and I went back to the pool because we wanted to see if the pool was warm before paying for a room. I could not believe what I saw! I told my kids that is disgusting it looks like a pond. My daughter said maybe it is colored that way(she is 6). I had to explain to her that that was algae and from not cleaning the pool. We couldn't even see through the water. Needless to say we turned around and went to the Rodeway Inn a block away. I was so thankful we looked at the pool first at the Quality Inn before booking a room. I would hate to think what the room looked like.
