We had been driving all day, headed West, and decided around the city of Tucumcari that we should find a place to stay for the night. I never would have suspected we'd stay at such a charming little place as the Blue Swallow, but there we were! We arrived kind of late at night and wasn't able to see the full details of the place till morning. That made for some fun for us, walking around in the morning and discovering the place. They have two older dogs that are so sweet and nice to pet while drinking your coffee before checking out.
You really can't beat this place, for the details so true to the time they want to recreate and the comfort you get when staying here. They put so much love into this place, the owners, and you can see and feel it everywhere. The bed was beyond comfy as well. They even had garages to store your car! Cool.
The only negative was that we had to check-out early. I'm young and wanted to sleep in, or at least have a slow morning without rushing, and I wasn't really able to do my normal routine as I worried about the time. This isn't a problem for most of their clientele, who get up really early and back out on the road for a long day's driving. We might have been the last ones to leave that morning, but they didn't mind nor seem to rush us. That was nice, as I wanted to hang around for a bit and just enjoy their little bit of Heaven.
The best parts of our stay? The focus on detail and the friendly couple who owned the place. We also met the people who were staying there. It was a place where you could take time to talk with others and that is was the whole "Route 66" lifestyle is about. I loved that aspect and feeling. We met some guy there who was such a character. Oh my, I loved him and laughed so much that night. It was so much fun chatting with him and was so easy to do because of the chairs outside and feeling of the place that allowed that space to come naturally. We also enjoyed swinging in the swing outside in the little 'green area' they had on one part of the site.
Also, there are great photos to take of the cars they have in front or just around of the rooms/motel.
You must stop here, I insist, when you are going through this route and need a place to stay! They bring you back to a mindset that allows you to slow down and enjoy the smaller things of life. I'm so happy that they are receiving so much praise, as they deserve all the rewards that comes from putting your heart into something you love. Amazing place, that we found by mistake. So happy to have stayed here on the first night of our big road trip out West. Of course, there are cheaper places to rest your head in this city (many of them), but they won't even come close to the experience you get while staying here.
If you want charming and personal, you found it. Make sure to walk around and get some Rte 66 sign photos.
