“Recommended to Me - NOW, I'm Recommending!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 16, 2013

If you want a charming, cozy room to call your own after a long trip - look no further! I drove over 800 miles on the first day of my trip and was very pleased with the accommodations provided by the Blue Swallow Motel. Nancy greeted me and my two daughters when we arrived, showing us room 15. Nancy recommended a great local restaurant for dinner and then we settled in for the night. My biggest reservation with any place that is not my own is the mattress. The Blue Swallow did NOT disappoint.

My daughters mentioned that they felt like they were in a family friend's house instead of a hotel and loved all the quirky (to them since they are teenagers) decor! After I reminded them what Nancy had said about when the room was built, they understood that it all related.

We also stayed on our return trip and couldn't wait to rest our heads in the familiar surroundings, especially since we got the same room. Although, this time, I got to meet Kevin since Nancy had lost her voice.

The Blue Swallow Motel is definitely a stop we will make whenever in the area. You can't beat the price and at home feel!

Room Tip: Room 15 is a great room on the end. Easy to park and if traveling early or late, great in/out acces...

Agree with all the positive feedback from other travellers. A warm, friendly motel that is full of period fittings and a wonderfully comfy modern bed. We were greeted (and approved of) by the owners' two dogs.

Spent some time the next morning visiting the various murals in town - plenty of photos taken. If you stay in room 1, you get the mural of James Dean on your outside wall.

The espresso cafe nearby looks great but (in January at least) was only open until 11am and so we missed it.

Room Tip: Room 1 for the James Dean mural outside - and 'cars' murals in the associated garage

Driving from CA to FL we went out of our way by three hours just to come back to the Blue Swallow. And without asking we even got the same room - so it is now "our room". Since our last visit the painting of the building has been finished and looks great! We were warm and snug, comfy bed with great pillows and comforter and lots of fresh coffee ready early. We never have enough time to explore the town or restaurants and hope to someday discover there's a restaurant as worthy as the Blue Swallow to bring us back.
Nancy and Kevin - have a great vacation!
And now onto Longview for Dudley's

Unique motel has kept it's old-timey charm. All furnishings and fixtures are vintage (except the mattresses), but everything is clean and in excellent condition. The mattresses and pillows are new and AMAZING...imagine sleeping in a cloud! The owners are friendly and helpful. Even the lobby is a pleasant place where you might want to sit and hang out. All this at a very affordable price.

For nostalgia, it can't be beat(en). Except for the late-model cars in the lot I could imagine I'd gone back 60 years. My wife and I liked the setting a lot. The owner is nice, showing the room before checking us in. Our room had a garage right beside the room. That was neat. The room was small, of course, to be expected from the '40s, likewise the bathroom. The bathroom fixtures were original. And the bathroom window opens, so you can get flow-through ventilation. I like that. The bed was comfy, decorations were great, and the wall heater worked very well. The only downside is that the walls are thin enough that we could hear our neighbors' conversations well, and could understand a good bit of them, even to which articles went into which bags. Part of the experience. It was a cool place overall. I rated it very good on balance because of the ambiance.

Stayed here with my brother just after Memorial Day 2012 for a night on our way to Santa Fe -- as a Route 66 junkie, staying here was a must :) Kevin gave us a tour of the room before we officially checked in to make sure it was what we expected. We had one of the rooms where we could pull into a garage (complete with a Cars movie mural). While the showers are on the small side (completely expected due to the era built), we have no complaints about the room or our stay! Wi-fi was fast. Kevin also recommended the steakhouse across the street for dinner (it was the third night their son was working there; great service from him as well!). As we loaded up the next morning, Kevin and Nancy's dogs came to greet us and send us off on a positive note on our travels. Will definitely stay here again on all future travels westward on Route 66/I-40!

We loved it! We stepped back in time to the days of the 1960s with a few delightful exceptions--COMFORTABLE (new) beds, new carpeting, freshly painted walls, excellent toiletries! We enjoyed the murals painted in the garages (yes, there are garages), neon lights on the motel, retro decor inside the room detailed down to the telephone and black and white TV (a NEW TV also if you must). There is an OLD refrigerator shared behind the office where you keep your sodas cool and a pot of coffee in the morning....plus the golden retriever. Yes. A great place to stay!
