Sure you can stay at a fancier, higher priced motel by the interstate, but if you drive into old Tucumcari there you will find much better value in a place to sleep and an evening meal. The grand glory days of the lure of Route 66 is not what it once was since the interstate was built. You can see that in the neglect of maintenance or modernizing of many businesses in town. Most places probably haven't changed much since the 1970s. You will also find that the prices haven't gone up very much either. You can find a nice room at this motel for about $35, and full dinner at the restaurant next door for about $10. By the interstate there are only fast-food places, NO full service restaurants there. In the town you can still enjoy the coolness of the Route 66 travel adventures of the bygone days. The room here was very comfortable, quiet and enjoyable at probably 1/3 the price you would pay next to the interstate. Breakfast here though is very poor, skip it and splurge on a good breakfast at a restaurant.
