“A Real Treat!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 19, 2012

We selected Motel Safari for a stop over enroute from Alabama to Las Vegas. The reviews on tripadvisor convinced us to give it a try and we were not dissapointed. As other reviewers have noted, this is probably as clean a motel as we have ever stayed in from low end to high end.
Gail greeted us in the office and then walked us over to our room to explain how to operate everything and to make sure everything was OK. She referred us to the local restaurants and sights
We had planned to stay in Santa Rosa on the return trip but we enjoyed the one night at Motel Safari so much that we decided to drive the extra hour coming home and stay a second stay at Motel Safari. As it turns out we had a mechanical problem with our vehicle and had to stay overnight for a second night while parts had to be shipped in to the local GMC dealer from Amarillo. Three days is more than ample time to see everything in Tucumcari, but the folks there are all friendly and helpful.
If we ever drive west again and the times fall right, we will most certainly stop in again at Motel Safari. The only thing missing in the room was a hair dryer, so we purchased one the second visit at a local variety store. Come to think of it, I don't remember hair dryers being around when this 1950's motel was constructed, so no hair dryer is part of the nostalgia.

We had a very nice welcome from Gail as well. She shared with us a great place to enjoy dinner and even offered a ride to and from the restaurant! We drove ourselves as we had a couple of errands to run. Our room was very clean as others have said and the bed was the best bed we have slept on in a motel in a long time. Unfortunately, mother nature decided to have a massive hail and thunderstorm that kept us from much needed sleep! However, I am sure had that not happened we would have slept GREAT! The towels are wonderful and the shampoo and soap etc..smelled wonderful. We would love to stop here again sometime. We loved the extra little touches the owner added to make this something special! My only suggestion would be to add a luggage rack to the room. Maybe that doesn't go with the time period though? :)

Room Tip: Towards the back would probably be the least noisy due to Route 66 traffic

If you think your hotel needs to have a fruity name like ZaZa or Bliss then keep your ego moving on to another town. However if you can fit into your surroundings and enjoy the variety of life then a stay at Hotel Safari is a must! The current owners (have only been 3 since it opened in 1974) have done an excellent job restoring this gem of American history. Small details keep the value o it's history while new Serta beds let you dream like never before. I am serious this was the most comfortable bed I have ever slept in. So swing by Hotel Safari, say hi to Gail and think of all the stories this place could tell if it could talk!

Lovely warm welcome from Gail, she spent a good amount of time to tell us of the local attractions and where to eat. The room was very nice and the bed and pillows were so comfortable. The bed linen was spotless and the towels white and fluffy. We had a lovely night here. The only small hitch I found was that there was no mirror near the plug to dry my hair.

When you set out to combine the best that a classic old motel can offer and the modern touches that travelers today expect it can be a daunting task. Richard and Gail from the Safari have done just that. While the Safari may be a 50+ year old motel it is certainly in great condition. I recommend it to anyone who wants to experience a little of what Route 66 travel may have been like in the 1960s without giving up some of the comforts of the 21st century.

The room was clean and had the best quality towels ever. the staff was friendly. The bed was comfortable but felt the room was a little small. No breakfast included.

What a wonderful retro rendesvous! Connecting with friends could not have been better! I was not sure what to expect but was very satisfied with the apointments in the room and the help from Gail and Richard. The pillow-top bed was a super bonus as were the plush towels and the flat-screen tv. Traveling back in time to visit with friends was a blast and being able to enjoy our stay at Motel Safari even better!
