Last real artist in Taos?

On a recent trip to Taos I was disappointed in the type of art I saw displayed in the galleries. Mostly I saw commercialized, pseudo-Western Indian paintings, uninspired landscapes and all manner of "tourist" art, even a good deal of "metal" art made in China!
Was this all that was left of Taos' great history of being an artist's mecca? I thought so until I ran into a sculpture studio behind Taos Clay on Paseo just a few miles north of the center of town towards the "old blinking light " in the direction of Arroyo Seco.
Gialanella is a true gem. He created several incredible life-size animal sculptures, a horse and an Ostrich, that grace the downtown area.
Disarmingly modest and approachable, he showed us his studio and explained the various projects he was working on. He seems to be a wizard at turning the piles of rusty, recycled steel that lie in heaps outside of his studio, into life-like sculptures that will blow you away.

He is without a doubt one of the last real artists in Taos! Absolutely worth a visit. His phone number is [--].

We ended up our two-week vacation in Taos after visiting five national parks in Utah plus the Grand Canyon. We had been in Taos almost 40 years ago -- during the hippie movement!

We were disappointed in the town of Taos mainly because of the terrible traffic flow, terrible streets, rude drivers, and a general air of dirt and clutter. Having said that, it was interesting visiting the art galleries and the people running them were always friendly. We also enjoyed lunch at Graham's Grille, but wound up eating our dinners out of town -- The Stakeout and The Trading Post Cafe -- both absolutely outstanding. We stayed at the Adobe & Pines B & B which was also an excellent choice -- also out of town.

All in all, we enjoyed our stay in Taos, but it is not a destination to which we will return.

My wife and I live in Albuquerque. At least once a year, we visit Taos for a short vacation (and sometimes business or shopping). After the Fechin Inn closed for conversion into condos, we now stay at a B&B. Judging from the reviews of the hotels, there are several B&Bs in Taos that are much better selections.

There are several good restaurants in Taos. Check the reviews because they change chefs sometimes and the quality changes.

Be sure to check our the shops not immediately around the plaza. Lumina Gallery is a 15-minute drive north of Taos; it is well worth a visit. Mission Gallery is also a nice gallery that is a short walk east of the plaza.

There are several interesting museums in Taos. The Millicent Rogers museum features her excellent collection of Indian artifacts. It is located north of Taos.

Taos is located about 90 minutes north of Santa Fe. The drive passes through a beautiful canyon and an incredible view as you approach Taos.

Recently spent a week in Taos at a workshop. It's an interesting town — a tourist town with little happening after 6pm and not much after 5! It's not even very easy to find an evening meal.
Our favorite restaurant became the Taos Pizza Out Back, which had very good pizzas made to order and excellent salads. The Dragonfly Cafe had a very nice luncheon menu with tasty food but a rather weak dressing on their house salad. We tried Michael's Bakery once for lunch. It was very busy with about a 15 minute wait. Their spaghetti with meat sauce was extremely watery. My friend had to drain her bowl before she could eat it. Seems Michael's may be best for breakfast. Many people were eating from the breakfast menu at lunch time.
We tried to go to Byzantium but never found it open — lunch, dinner, or weekends.
A week-long stay at the Burch Street Casitas was very satisfactory. Nice apartment-style room with full kitchen, washer/dryer, convenient parking, and very quiet, only a short distance from the center of town. Unfortunately, air conditioning is rare anywhere in Taos, though this is probably a problem only in July and August.
Be sure to check out Mesa's Edge for remarkable jewelry, and it's fun to browse at Taos Gems and Minerals.
