“The place to stay in Taos NM”

Large rooms at small room prices; very clean & quiet; indoor pool; close to old downtown; great staff. Breakfast--eggs, sausage juice coffee, hot water, variety of mini muffins, bagels, etc. I'd love to stay here again when I have more days to stay.

I read the previous reviews posted on here and noticed that the management gave a response to many reviews on this hotel. For this reason, I decided to give Don fernando de Taos the benefit of the doubt and book a stay for a last minute weekend to Taos to see the Fall colors. First of all, the staff is nice and accommodating. However, the hotel was in complete disrepair and probably would not pass inspection if were to be sold. The pictures on the website really need to be updated because there is no restaurant, bar or even a hot tub. My 6- yr old son was really looking forward to swimming in the pool, but I would not let him for several reasons; There was a piece of plywood covering the hot tub, there was a draft in the pool area, the heaters above looked like they have not been touched by a maintenace man in 30 yrs and looked as if they would fall into the pool. The cement around the pool needed to be resurfaced badly. In order to appease my son, we played pool in the lobby on a very dated pool table which surprisingly cost a dollar a game to play. Then, he needed to use the bathroom in the lobby and it smelled of a backed up sewer. The supposed restaurant that is "coming in fall of 2013" looks as if it has mountains to climb before it opens because there are visible leaks on the ceiling.
The room itself was ok for, again, 50 bucks a night. The exhaust fan in the bathroom didn't work. From inside the room you could see where the door needed new weather stripping. the room was very drafty but very hot when you turned on the outdated heater that probably didn't have a working thermostat. However, we did not have any bed bugs. the staff gave us extra pillows when we asked for them. The maid was very nice and made sure we had extra coffee.
My husband and I were both thinking of how nice this place must have been in its hey day and how it could still be a nice place if fixed up to expectations. The management really needs to take these reviews seriously and address the issues. For now, do not beleive what the management replies to my review unless you see it for yourself.

Room Tip: If you ask fo rwhat you want, the staff will try their best to help you

Found this hotel to be very well taken care of and very good hospitality. Central located to Taos activities with a relaxed park like setting. Not a high rise hotel but spread out for maximum ability to avoid noise etc. Good parking and rooms had all the desired comforts that I find desirable for being on my own. Fridge and microwave and along with the breakfast offered by the hotel made for most options needed. Ample sized rooms.

Room Tip: can request ground floor or the only two floors

I was in Taos for several days for the Wool Festival. My room was wonderfully spacious and I enjoyed the lay out of the property. The bed was comfortable and every night was quiet. The place is not new and it shows, but for the price.... it was great. I could hear the plumbing of an adjacent room, but no voices or TV sounds. I visited friends at other hotels and felt I had the best place for the price. The breakfast was adequate. I did not use the pool. I would stay again.

All the people at the front desk were very polite. The room was very spacious and all the complex is very well maintain. the breakfast room is big and there is also a lot of choices to start your morning. (orange juice, apple juice, water, coffee, bagels, muffin, cornflakes, eggs, sausages, ...). we checked out also the heated pool and looked clean, we didn't use it thou.
We recommend the place.
We saw also there were some construction in the lobby to renew the bar area, sure it will turn out nicely done.
we didn't use SPA or Fitness Center.

First of all, this place is older it is in the process of being updated and it is clean. We stayed here two times, first on our way to Colorado to visit family and then on the way back home. Both for two nights.
The rooms are setup in separate buildings so you don't really feel like your at a hotel. Our room came with a fridge, microwave, king sized bed, sofa and table. The room looked like it had not been updated since 1995 however it was somewhat charming. Our cats enjoyed staying here, spending their time in the large window while we were visiting the town. The hotel is pet friendly so that is a huge bonus. On the down side the hotel is not close to the plaza so if that is something you want and you have the money then stay somewhere else.
However there are a few things in the area within walking distance, a coffee house right across the street as well as Wal-Mart in case you need to grab something and I would recommend eating at the El Taoseño Restaurant & Lounge which has authentic New Mexican cuisine and they serve alcohol .
The Don Fernando has a continental breakfast that runs until 10a.m. They also have a pool. All the staff is super nice, I think this place is overall pretty good.

This hotel was picked by a family friend that had not stayed here and thought it would be great to be close to them, wrong.
The room smelled horrible, the furniture was stained, the bathroom was gross and even worse the sheets looked like they had not been washed.
I could not sleep at all the room smelled so bad and I sneezed all night, finally in the moring figured out it was a funky smell in the pillows, like some type of hair product.
We were to stay a week but left first thing in the morning.
I think people are actually living in the rooms.
