We ended up at the Hampton Inn accidentally when we were snowed in during a December family vacation. The hotel was extremely accommodating and provided us with an AAA rate of $149 (just a note that the local occupancy tax is quite high).

LOCATION:

The location is right on the main street in Taos a few miles away from the historic plaza. However, it is extremely easy to get in and out of the property and to use it as a base location (as long as you are not planning on walking) it is fine.

ROOMS:

The rooms are a bit dated but well-maintained. We did not feel cramped with 3 people in the room. They felt clean and the beds were comfortable. The rooms offered free Wi-Fi (with a strong connection) and good-sized bathroom. We did not hear our neighbors (or street noise) even though the hotel was pretty full.

OVERALL:
We have not stayed at a Hampton Inn before but this experience would convince us to try this chain again. This hotel is not fancy and it is not new but it affords an easy, clean and safe stay for a family or couple traveling through. The breakfast was also all you needed to get started in the morning (including a few hot items) and was comparable to breakfasts served at a Holiday Inn Express.

My other half and I took a vacation from Denver down through the Northern part of New Mexico, over to the four corners region, and then back home through Southern Colorado. We made a point to include Taos in our trip. We really like the area surrounding Taos, and we really enjoyed our last visit to the Hampton Inn. We were not disappointed this trip either. We had a very comfortable room, though it was very hot. We tend to keep our home at about 65 or under in the winter, and the rooms and stairways were at least 80 or above. I am sure most like it like this, but we prefer cooler. Not a problem though as we just turned on the AC and opened the window for awhile...viola, a cooler room! The Hampton Inn in Taos is an older inn, but they keep it up. The staff is very friendly and they keep the place clean. The Cloud 9 beds are comfortable, and the chair and ottoman in the room was very relaxing. The water pressure in the shower and sink are also good. The pool and hot tub are clean, though the door to the facility does not work properly and we forgot that from our previous visit. You have to scan your card and lift UP rather than pull DOWN to get the door open. Another change is you also need to bring a towel from your room or go to the front desk for a towel. They also leave the facility open until 11pm which is a nice touch. Breakfast is filling, with a basic entree and then the balance being a continental fare of toast, biscuits, bagels, fruit and yogurt. Three types of coffee, hot water for tea, and two kinds of juice are included. There are also cookies all the time in the lobby. We will be back to this location, as they really take good care of their customers!

Thanks, Darron

  • Liked — Quiet and relaxing. Nice views from room
  • Disliked — Pool and hot tub is indoors, but you have to go outside to get to it...just a bit chilly, but doable!

The only thing that moves this hotel from average to above average is the staff service and attitude, which were outstanding. Otherwise, most other aspects of the hotel are pretty average. Location is good, on the edge of town. The room and bathroom were moderately clean. The lighting in the bathroom was dim, but the mirror was a nice full-wall thing. The commons area was small and cramped, and the complimentary breakfast was only Fair, which seems to be par for Hampton's breakfasts. As I said, however, the staff was very helpful and pleasant, and that goes a long way in affecting our ratings.

  • Liked — Staff Service and Friendliness

Excellent location - a short drive from downtown Taos. We stayed for 3 nights. Room was clean. The beds were extremely comfortable. The front desk staff was friendly and knowledgeable about the area. Breakfast was available in the morning - Chips/Salsa and cookies served in the afternoon. I would recommend this location and would definitely stay there again. They had a nice workout room, but we didn't get the chance to use it.

  • Liked — Convenient location, friendly staff,
  • Disliked — Its on a busy road.

As my wife and I were driving towards Taos we decided to call ahead and ask for the going rates at several hotels. The staff member on the phone was incredibly rude and abrupt and actually hang up on me part way through me asking a question. Apparently the "yes we have a vacancy" and "its $130 a night" was all the information I was allowed. We showed up anyway once we got into Taos as usually my AAA membership and having a decent chat with the late night hotel front desk manager gets you a better rate as its unlikely anyone else will be showing up at midnight.....

However, once I walked in and enquired about the rate, the lady behind the desk went from curt to just plain rude. I was quoted the same rate again (no issue there as I was just checking the options) however as I enquired if they had anything cheaper I was informed that "WE DON'T DO CHEAP" and was laughed at!

I decided that keeping my cool was better than anything else and left after informing the woman that as a Hilton Honours Platinum member I was well aware of the rates having stayed at dozens of different properties and for a vacant friday night with to parking lot empty I was surprised that she didn't have the sense to lower off the top rack rate.

Anyway - we booked into the confort suites just opposite for nearly half the price, got a full suite and had a great stay thanks to the front desk manager there.

Can't comment on the accomodation, but as always - don't expect it to be any better than the staff!
