“Feeling its age”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed June 6, 2014

My first impression was hopeful.
Walking to my room it's age was truly obvious. The room was very outdated. The exterior entry was gross. Pigeons have set up home along the entry. Rotting ceilings, yuck!
It is a great location is great is all it has going for it.

Nice, clean rooms with vigas, and territorial ambiance. The kind of place you go in order to experience the area, as opposed to just driving through. Breakfast was average, but certainly adequate to fuel for a trip around town.

Room Tip: if setting reservation by internet, keep copy of confirmation available.

I made a reservation at Kachina for Spring Break for four friends (4 nights). Even though I cancelled the reservation, they charged the full, four-night stay to my card (AFTER I cancelled my reservation), and then refused to refund me the money for over a month. Only after I got a lawyer, and he threatened to call the DA's office, did I finally get my money back--and that was without any extra for the inconvenience and lawyer fees. Avoid Cheryl Webster and Kachina at all costs!

Don't let the pictures on their website fool you this place was not clean. The bathtub was visibly dirty as though it hadn't been cleaned in years. No one should have to crawl under a table to turn on the air conditioner but that was the case in my room. As for the free breakfast? Don't waste your time, the food was mediocre at best and the coffee was not worth drinking because it tasted bad.

My last morning there all of the little trash bags taken from the different rooms from the day before were piled up in a corner in the stairwell. I don't need fancy amenities but I do expect the room to be clean. I am now sick no doubt from whatever crud was floating around the room.

We stayed here in early April 2014 and were disappointed. My mom booked the room based on previous visits to Taos but the Kachina has definitely lost ground. The bathtub had a gray ring around the sides, the bottom of the tub was also gray. The wall above the trash can had clearly been used as a backboard for bank shots into the trash, and not wiped down afterwards. The billboard in front of the property advertised weekly and monthly rates, not a good sign. The ladies room off the lobby was missing handles on the sink, and the roll of paper towels had been left on the counter instead of installed in the dispenser. The forlorn fake flowers in various planters really didn't do much to perk the place up. The property definitely has the potential to be very nice, and the staff were very friendly but Kachina Lodge has seen better days and is unlikely to regain its former status. We canceled our reservation for the next trip and went to the Pueblo Motel across the street instead, which was nicer.

After using all the affordable and many pricier lodgers since 1980, I pronounce this Taos' Best lodging value today. A great way to experience the indoor/outdoor museum/gallery/exercise/sports/scenery experience of Old (1600's) Taos without breaking the bank!
Solidly built, courteously operated, it features traditional architecture with Native American themes. Lots of original art in spacious public gallery area. Completing renovation to recover from Taos' loss of natural gas several winters ago. I have stayed there for 30 years without any noise problems. No alcohol sales or noisy lounge inappropriate to children.
Convenient moderate walk to historic Taos Plaza square, past microbrewery nextdoor, galleries & cafes, Michael's Kitchen (grade-A), and pricey but unique historic Taos Inn (eat at Doc Martin's Restaurant and enjoy nightly live music).
Location north of Plaza avoids most stoplights and and 2-lane traffic congestion for a straight shot north to Taos Pueblo, Casino, Ski Valley, Rio Grande Gorge, and Colorado.
Various choices of free hot breakfast till 10:30 in the unique round Kiva Coffee Shop with massive authentic Totem Pole in center. Outdoor pool with year-round hot tub.

Room Tip: Call direct to discuss details and weekly rates for a real vacation. Good deals on Hotels.com.

Thank you for your kind and realistic compliments. It's very encouraging that some others recognize the cultural and other value aspects of our hotel. We have an ambience of

a visit to Taos that most of our Hotel Guests won't forget and will be anxious to re-visit. Thanks

I never write reviews but do not go to this place. The room rate was much higher than advertised, but we were tired of traveling so we went for it. When we drove to our room we passed a headless pigeon on the ground I am not kidding. Inside the room smelled weird and there was hair all over the bathtub. All. Over. When I went to exchange the room I was met with a rude attitude and an offer to have someone clean it but apparently that was all she could do. The motel was definitely not sold out so I highly doubt that's all she could do. We ended up staying across the street at El pueblo for about the same price and couldn't believe how much better it was. Great breakfast too. Do yourself a favor and go to El Pueblo.
