“Beautiful setting, conveniently located near town--a great place to stay!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 25, 2010

My family and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay at San Geronimo Lodge. It is a beautiful, private setting with lovely grounds. We loved sitting on our terrace looking at the mountains. We also enjoyed the pool and hot tub. The breakfasts are excellent and very substantial. The owners and staff were very pleasant and accomodating to us. Highly recommended!

San Geronimo is an old adobe hotel that has been restored but without adding most modern conveniences (with the exception of wi-fi). The rooms are not air conditioned. My wife couldn't decide whether to leave the doors/windows open to cool the room, or close them to cut off the noise of dogs barking. One makes a reservation for breakfast (no earlier than 7:30), and has a very limited selection. The cook only knew how to scramble eggs. It is located in an old run-down neighborhood.

Most of Taos is old and rustic, which is its charm. Alas, that night a neighbor’s guest brought a barking dog. We are priced like other B&Bs, but offer much more …labyrinth, prayer path, hot tub and pool, with wi-fi, cable TV, DVDs, and great beds in all rooms. Room AC’s are available on request. Continental Breakfast starts at 6:30. Omelets, stratas or frittatas are served 7:30 to 9:00.

We stayed here over the 4th with our dog. The place is about 2.5 miles from town center. It is well maintained in the lobby with the old world charm that is only with Taos. We had room 4, which is the handicapped room. It was clean, pleasant and had the adobe fireplace. They have pretty grounds with paths, and plenty of area for dogs. The owners dogs Bear and Simba were well mannered and quite the staple of the place.

The breakfast in the morning was awesome. Bluecorn blueberry pancakes. Yum!!

Lovely, very well maintained pool. I would highly recommend this for those with pets, those wanting a nice place to relax, and for a wedding or family reunion....top of the line.

The mattresses are brand new and pillow top....sunk in and loved it. It was never hot in our room the thick adobe walls and first floor room make it so. No need for air conditioning but they will put one in for you if you want.

Oh, and go hiking with a day trip with Llama. It is rated the number 1 thing to do. I thought are you kidding me?!! So I tried it, and it was incredible.

Based on the reviews and the pictures on the web site, we were expecting a relaxing oasis - this is a dirty motel. Our trip got off to a bad start when we showed up at 4pm (the specified check-in time) and found no one at the desk. There were keys laid out for "self check-in" for other guests, but ours was not there. We rang the bell - no answer. We called the emergency number - straight to voice mail. We waited in the hot, non-air conditioned lobby for close to 30 minutes before the owner wondered in. He offered no apologies for the wait, only commenting that he was outside by the pool and his phone had no batteries. Once we made it to our room, we discovered it too was hot and dirty. Without air conditioning the room was very uncomfortable, and the small windows and loud floor fan provided no relief. The bed has no support and the linens are scratchy and questionable. The TV is an old CRT that is smaller than my laptop screen. The carpet and walls are patched and stained. The bathroom is utilitarian at best. A new Motel-6 would be nicer than this place. Do not stay here - it is not as represented. The place could have some charm with a lot of TLC.

Our mistakes. Sorry we weren’t at the desk to greet you. (If you'd walked out to the pool you would have found us.) We know you were angry, but many of your comments are “questionable.” To call San Geronimo a “dirty motel” challenges the judgment of independent reviewers (AAA and NMBBA) and countless guests before and since your visit.

My husband and I, seeking a romantic escape stayed at San Geronimo based on TA’s glowing reviews. Our experience was very different. The first thing we noticed were the plastic ferns that hung from the patio, a harbinger of things to come. An employee checked us in. She was nice enough. After that no one was around. While other B&Bs greet their weary guests with freshly baked cookies and a generous assortment of beverages to help unwind after a long day of travel, we were offered vending-machine munchies. They weren’t in a machine but we did have to pay the kitty. Apparently the proprietors didn’t get the memo about New Mexican “mi casa es su casa” hospitality which was as rationed as breakfast. When we saw our room, we wondered if the “historic” reference on the welcome sign had more to do with the circa 1970’s, motel-like entrances with dirty unattractive doors and entry-ways. Our room was ample with a comfortable king-sized bed and fireplace (that wouldn’t light). The bathroom was also good-sized with a large, plain shower that had to warm up for 5 minutes and then slowly trickled out before quickly turning cold again. The carpet was stained, the fixtures dated. The décor was an incongruent clash of Egyptian, South Western, and the weirdly abstract. Yet, San Geronimo has great potential: The main house is a roomy, old world New Mexican style structure with wood flooring, ceiling, and adobe with a very large fireplace that warmly lit the cool morning air during breakfast. But the natural, welcoming beauty of the New Mexican style was overwhelmed by the eclectic décor that fell short of its goal and was but a mishmash of confused themes and ideas that rather than welcome and inspire, cast an air of darkness. The mood created can best be described as cold and unsettled. We won’t be back.

The shower handles ARE tricky, (pull for on; twist for temp) but there is always ample hot water. If they didn’t get a hot shower, no wonder their experience was “cold and unsettling.” As for our décor, it IS eclectic, like great-grandfather’s ornate 1860’s desk, but many people find it fascinating. We plan to change the entry doors soon. As for the snacks, feeding the kitty is optional.

I have been traveling to New Mexico for over 30 years and this was my first time in San Geronimo. No, it is not in Taos, but outside in the beautiful and quiet contryside. Taos a very easy drive in, why are you in New Mexico with out a car? Gorgeous room with king size bed, fire place, walk in shower. Lots of pillows, incredibly soft sheets.

Breakfast was simple but tasty. Eggs, Canadian bacon, fruit and muffin. Could make a whole breakfast on the breads, cereals and yogurt but out while you wait. Lovely strong coffee.

Property beautiful in late winter snow, will have to come back sometime in high season for the pool! Quiet and relaxing, I hated to leave.

I was fortunate to spend 9 days at the San Geronimo Lodge in Taos, New Mexico. Owners Pam and Charles Montgomery, husband and wife, made my stay as beautiful and as comfortable as possible, while helping me arrange transportation, keep in touch at work and feel loved. Food prepared and served by husband and wife Matt & Armida Martinez and brother and sister Remedios & Erasto Zarasua was gorgeous, healthy and accommodated my nutritional needs. The Lodge is filled with lovely art, incredible rocks and crystals and Charles sometimes plays the piano! Everyone generously shared their time, talent and smiles. All this and affordability, too.
