“Not just a Road...”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 27, 2013

The views are GORGEOUS...I actually like this route better than the High Road to Taos (which is nice if you want to stop at the little villages along the way). Too bad some people just want to zip past you and press the pedal to the metal and miss this magnificent scenery. I just pull over and let 'em go and then get back to the beauty of northern New Mexico.

“Semi - Heart Failure”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 26, 2013

The title is a slight exaggeration. The road is twisty, up and down steep inclines, and definitely scenic. Why be bored?

This is just a breathtaking beautiful drive! If you enjoy expansive vistas, this can't be missed. Plenty of places to pull over and just enjoy the land.

“Mixed route”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 25, 2013

The low road to Taos is a very mixed bag. From Santa Fe to Espanola, it's a regular divided road and not too interesting. North of Espanola, the scenery is a little better until the road eventually joins up with the Rio Grande river. As it winds through the river valley, it's very pretty, with steep cliffs on one side, the river on the other. However, the road is narrow and winding, and it's the main truck route north. You won't get much chance to enjoy the scenery as the traffic is fast and with people trying to overtake slower-moving vehicles. The village of Dixon is to the east off the highway, with two worthwhile wineries: La Chiripada, and Vivac. There's a nice little co-op in Dixon offering a wide range of groceries and local products.
Enjoy the view of the Rio Grande gorge as you come out onto the mesa near Taos.

“Beautiful drive along the Rio Grande”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 23, 2013

I love the low road to Taos. It's faster than the high road and just as beautiful. A great stop is the Black Mesa Winery. Excellent wines all around!!! We bought three cases while there!!!!
