“Very nice experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 12, 2010

The setting for this hotel is beautiful. The area is quiet. The central area has flowing waters for a very calming effect. The staff were very polite and attentive. The premier rooms are clean and each one has a theme that some might find a little cheesy. We were first checked into the Egypt room, but the hot tub did not work, so they upgraded us at no charge to the Marrakesh suite. Very nice! The rooms are clean and spacious. The hair dryers are worthless - bring your own. My wife had a great spa treatment - highly recommended. There is no automatic turn-down service, so you will have to request it. The valet parking is a rip off. The parking lot is open (uncovered) and next to the hotel. When we arrived there was no valet, so we parked ourselves, but you still pay the valet fee. We enjoyed the hot tub in the evening under the stars, and again in the morning at sunrise. The main pool/spa was closed for maintenance and you would think this would warrant a discount on the room rate...forget about it. This hotel is very pricey, but we splurged and enjoyed being pampered. There are others in the area that are similar that cost less. I would recommend to someone who wants the experience, but if you are simply passing through or going skiing, I would look elsewhere. Unless money is no object. My review of the restaurant is under Del la Tierra.

El Monte Sagrado offers it all -- beautiful setting, walking distance to shopping and restaurants....this peaceful place has a wonderful Spa, lovely accommodations, friendly staff, a well-equipped fitness center, a good restaurant and a lively bar with live music on some nights. It's truly first-rate...a place to visit again!

Here's the skinny on El Monte Sagrado. My husband and I travel to Taos to ski at least 2x per year. This is the 3rd time we have stayed at this hotel. At this point, I'd have to say 3 strikes and they are officially OUT. There is no doubt that this hotel is aesthetically beautiful. The decor of the hotel rivals any other 5-Star Property. HOWEVER, while most of the people that work there try their best they are absolutely inexperienced, poorly trained, and always understaffed. Guaranteed if you make a request at this property it's not going to be fulfilled. For example, could we please have the New York Times delivered to our room in the mornings? Never happened. Could we please have turn down service (yes, you must request here)? Never happened.

A fair warning, if you want to stay here you're going to pay good money like you would at any Preferred Property. But, DON'T EXPECT 5-Star service, it's not going to happen. Again, we've stayed here 3x and we've always had several issues each time. If 5-Star service isn't a prerequisite then by all means you should visit but if the little things make you crazy when you're pay $500+ per night then save yourself the headache. Yes, they try hard but THEY ARE NEVER GOING TO GET IT.

We stayed four nights. The room was very nice, large, with a jacuzzi and gas fireplace. The decor was a little cheesy to be honest but others might like it. There were leather curtains, cowhide trimming on the vanity, cowskulls; aquamarine covered pillows etc. In fact I think the whole decor of the hotel is way overdone, but to each their own. It was a pretty quiet room except for being placed next to the storm door to the outside that made a fair amount of noise.
I have a couple complaints: first, a large part of the parking lot is reserved for valet parking even when no one was using it. They kept that section cleared of snow but the non valet section was icy and not plowed. I thought that was really cheap. I suppose it is excessive to suggest that instead of some of the expensive furnishings they consider a carport. That way each morning you don't have to scrape snow and ice off your car.
Next, the restaurant is not that good. They charged 31$ for a small piece of cod that was ruined by truffle oil. Each night we ate there we did not have good digestive results. I do not recommend the restaurant although some people may like that rich food style.
I tried to use the lobby area in front of the fireplace to sit and read and think, but there was constant staff traffic and noise and cold air from the front door. So I went upstairs to the library but again a lot of noise and staff wandering around talking--almost like during the day they don't expect any guests to actually try to use the hotel area.
Next, they don't have automated wake up calls but someone who calls and chats. Maybe some people like this. However, one morning no one called. I woke up anyway but it is a flaw in the approach.
They have nice grounds, pool and fitness. Given all the lavish decorations and amenities I understand the price of the rooms and you probably couldn't get nicer rooms elsewhere in Taos.

Beautiful charming place with everything you can look for in a hotel. The staff are well trained and were there to jump at our every request. The spa services were incredable. We had a wonderful dinner as well.

Stayed in one of the cabins for a killer promotional deal from travelzoo (119/night). Room was nice suite style. No bath but a walk-in shower which was good except for only having the giant rain showerhead (spouse loved it - I disliked it). Loved the pool and hot tub. Food at Tierra was very good. Breakfast was tasty and reasonably priced in a pretty arboretum. Everyone was super polite ("thanks," i said. "my pleasure," they responded). Everything was clean (including the silver coffee urns).

The bed was small, too hard and bounced whenever one of us turned over (and we are not overweight).

Paying for parking anywhere in NM is ridiculous. We have more room than pretty much any state. We parked down the street in the public park's parking area and walked the 5 mins to our room.

We felt welcome from the moment we arrived, and the property is beautiful, with or without plenty of snow. We stayed in the Native American Suite. Room service was fine, and the housekeeping staff was attentive. Every one in valet was friendly and helpful, and the Spa was one of the most enjoyable anywhere we've been. The library is warm and full of art, the walking paths are wonderful. Only ate at the Anaconda and it was average; I'm sure De la Tierra would be worth trying. It's a pleasant drive through some of the most beautiful mountains anywhere to the Taos Ski Valley. The road was passable even with up to 8 inches of snow.
