First, let me start by saying the my husband and I live in Colorado...one of the most beautiful places in the USA! We just returned from a much needed long weekend getaway in Taos. You need no more than 2 days to visit Taos. We shopped, ate and saw the sites. The people were very nice. Taos in my opinion is not very beautiful (in the middle of the desert), but if all you are looking for is a little Southwest flavor, then you'll get it in Taos, along with TONS of art galleries.
Now to the hotel. This place was the saving grace of our trip! It is the ONLY place worth staying at in Taos. Pay the extra money to stay here! You feel like you're at a resort! I must admit, there are some major mis-communications with check-in. Don't even bother calling to request early check-in. We did and didn't get into our room until 5:00pm (normal check-in is at 4:00pm???)! They are always still cleaning the rooms. Very odd.
Anyhow, once we got into our room, we fell in love! You MUST stay in the Taos Mountain Rooms which are the renovated rooms. When you arrive, you will see that one side of the hotel looks older and a bit rundown with outside entrances to your rooms. DO NOT let the front desk talk you into staying on that side of the hotel. They tried with us and I told them that we would wait for the Taos Moutain side. Basically, the older side of the property is decorated in Southwestern decor, each room with it's own theme. I like updated and modern, and that's exactly what the Taos Moutain View Rooms are. As long as you book that type of room, you will be very pleased with your stay.
The Anaconda Bar is GREAT! The atmosphere, drink and food selection, and service are fantastic! The two other restaurants looked gorgeous. Since we were on a relaxing weekend getaway, we chose room service. Again, great food, and quick delivery.
We didn't use the indoor pool, it was too cold. And, the hot tub was broken. I used the gym and it was very nice. We also went to the spa for a massage and it was fantastic. You felt like you were in a ski lodge. There was a fireplace in the room we received the massages in. So nice!
Anyhow, aside of the minor glitches, the El Monte Sagrado made our stay in Taos. I definitely think that this is the best place to stay if you are going to visit.
