We took the Orillo Verde float trip with our 3 children ages 10, 8 and 7. The tip was about 2.5 hours including driving and launch time. The water was pretty low, so I would consider it safe for even weak swimmers. Later in the season with higher water I would think twice unless your kids are confident swimmers.
Our guide was Dylan (he is also a youth ski instructor at Taos Ski Valley) and he was great with the kids. He had a very calm and capable demeanor and pointed our interesting things to look at. All of the kids had paddles, but my husband and I provided the actual "engine power".
We went in a 6 person raft, but you also have the option of renting funyaks. The funyaks are suitable for those with some experience, otherwise you will get stuck and/or flip over.
The kids favorite part by far was when they got to jump into the Rio Grande and swim.
At the end of the trip the guides provided fruit and chips for a snack.
Make sure to purchase a waterproof camera and also we found kids sized water shoes at the Walmart in Taos for $4.98.
We wished we had down this trip first thing upon arrival instead of waiting for the last day so that we would have had time to book a second trip.
We would do an overnight trip on our next visit to Taos.
Thank you for a great time!
