A nine-day holiday in New Mexico couldn't be complete without a night at the Mabel Dodge Luhan House, so said a friend. We'd stayed in the Austin room, with its own bath and fireplace, following a night of tango in Santa Fe. Now, some folks might not be accustomed to carrying their own bags; they might not be able to traverse, by foot, anything rougher than the sidewalks at the mall. They might not be able to even handle a cold shower. If you're among those who must be pampered at every turn, stay at a Hilton. But if you don't mind an occasional inconvenience, this place is a must-stay, if for the history of the place, if nothing else. A comfortable, warm bed; the wonderfully rustic nature of the place; and the kick-butt breakfast and inspiring atmosphere make the Luhan House well worth the price, which, by the way, is not that unreasonable.
