Owner description: Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge was established in 1939 to provide "a refuge and breeding ground for migratory birds and other wildlife" and to develop wintering grounds for greater sandhill cranes, which were then endangered.Located on the northern edge of the Chihuahuan desert, the 57,331-acre refuge straddles the Rio Grande approximately twenty miles south of Socorro, New Mexico. The heart of the refuge is 8,000 acres of floodplain where the waters of the Rio Grande have been diverted to create extensive wetlands and agricultural lands. The rest of the refuge is made up of arid foothills and mesas, which rise to the Chupadera Mountains to the west and San Pascual Mountains to the east. Most of these arid uplands are preserved in three Wilderness Areas.Bosque del Apache means "woods of the Apache," named for the Apaches that routinely camped in the riverside forest. Today, Bosque del Apache is known as one of the most spectacular refuges in North America. Each autumn, tens of thousands of birds - including sandhill cranes, Arctic geese and ducks - make the refuge their winter home. The air is filled with honking of geese and guttural call of cranes. Flocks of snow geese abandon their feeding grounds when frightened by a stalking coyote or eagle. At dusk, flights of geese and cranes return to roost tin the marshes or on the Rio Grande. In the summer, Bosque del Apache, thought quiet, remains an oasis for diversity of wildlife, both in the riparian areas and surrounding arid uplands.

“A birders delight!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 3, 2013

Hubby and I enjoyed our visit to this wildlife refuge. We spent two nights at nearby Socorro and visited the refuge for almost two days. Beautiful sunrises, amazing bird sightings and scenery. the Cottonwood trees were a beautiful Autumn color. The visitor center is great and the volunteers were nice and helpful. I even saw a mountain lion for a short time. Seeing all the Sandhill Cranes and Snow Geese was awesome. Being a birder the Bosque Del Apache refuge is a must see.

“Unique opportunity to view sandhill cranes”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 26, 2013

A venue that offers a learning experience about the life of migratory birds. We thought the information provided at the visitor center was helpful in finding viewing spots in the park where the birds could easily be viewed.

“Wonderful Experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 24, 2013

Even though all the winter birds haven't arrived yet, the tour is magical. The dirt roads are in very good shape and more than wide enough to park easily. Very nice visitors center with friendly staff. If you're a birder, it's got to be on your bucket list.

“Wildlife...!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 14, 2013

This is a driving exhibit worth the price of entrance! The surroundings are "eye candy" and the serenity of the area worth hours to meditate...It's a place where eagles nest and Sandhill Cranes spend time while migrating!!

“Like it!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 4, 2013

I'm not a bird watcher but this place is great. Staff was very helpful and knowledgeable....especially Kim. Road was easy to navigate, plenty of opportunities to stop and walk around. Layout provides easy visual access to all areas. I enjoyed seeing a turtle and a deer with her two fawns. Can hardly wait to get back.
