Okay, so you are driving Route 66. A must stop is the La Loma in Santa Rosa, NM. It is as original as you can get...meaning, though there were renovations and whatnot over the years, at least one of the other "original" motels on the route in Santa Rosa is gone. The surrounding grounds are a little worse for the wear, but Ed, the on-site proprietor, has been there for over 24 years...and a real gem of a person. He does most or all of the work himself and really cares about the guests. Don't expect luxury if you are unfamiliar with the property, but expect that Ed prepares each room as if he knew you were coming, and perhaps a reservation is a good idea. There is not much in the way of amenities, but you know it is a motel--inexpensive, but clean and manicured. The overnight rate is inexpensive, so do leave Ed a tip...he prides himself on the work he does and it is worth it for clean sheets, clean bathroom, the instructions for the wall heater, leaving the keys, etc. If not just to meet Ed, you will be glad you stayed, it is worth the stop.
