“A perfect start to our honeymoon”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 11, 2013 via mobile

We stayed at makanyane for four nights at the start of our honeymoon and it was our first ever safari. And what a start it was... On the first drive within hours of arriving we saw lions, giraffes, rhinos, elephants... Amazing. The guides are incredible and really knowledgable.

The rooms are beautiful.... Stepping in after a 36 hour flight from the U.K. and both our jaws dropped to the floor. The glassed walled rooms ensure an uninterrupted view of the river where if your lucky you will see hippos go past. The beds are comfy, and the outdoor shower an experience within itself.

The food is in abundance.... I think we both left a few pounds heavier. It's non stop and before you even get a chance to be hungry the next course is there. Simply faultless!!!

What makes this place though is their staff... Each and every person you meet wants to talk to you and takes the time to remember your name and each and every conversation you have had with them previously. Nothing is too much trouble and whereas in some hotels such service would feel too much at makanyane it's genuine. They want to talk to you to find out about you and your day. Again faultless!!

Another plus side to this lodge is the safari experience you get. We had more than one heart in your mouth moments with lairy elephants descending in the camp, and the glare of eyes caught by the torch as we headed back to our room in the pitch black escorted by their knowledgable security guides. We also had elephants by the river as we ate lunch, and buffaloes as we dined for dinner....

A truly magnificent experience.... When can we go back.

Makanyane Lodge is outstanding. From the moment we arrived on the airstrip we knew we were in for a wonderful two nights of sheer bliss.
The Lodge is expertly run by a team of people who are obviously passionate about not only the bush, but about making sure that you have the best experience. Everything is possible!
From the welcome cocktail on day one to the farewell breakfast two nights later we were pampered and catered for like kings.
Our room was breath-taking, with three walls made of glass, we felt as if we were in the bush. The outdoor shower was an incredible experience that added a tiny risk to the enjoyment.
The two game drives a day with the most informative guide were wonderful. Sharing the experience with 3 other couples made it so much fun.
We spent a night in the "hide"...... Do yourself a favour! If it's available, spend a night under the stars listening to the bush. Outstanding.

Can't wait to go back......

Room Tip: All rooms are exquisite. Only 8 to choose from. Ask to spend a night in the hide

It was a surprise for my 50th birthday...Wow what a place, your own private chalet (we heard Michelle Obama was staying in our room a few month before as she had rented the whole place for her trip) by the water where you can see the animals drink.. you are right in the park, so you need a guide to pick you up at night in case you came face to face with an animal. The food was brilliant. The safari.. twice a day with a very good and friendly guide, they think of everything.. a little drink in the middle of the bush.wow... a must and I would go back anytime... I am still nostalgical when I look at my photos...

What a very special weekend we had at Makanyane for my dad's 60th birthday.
The rooms are out of this world, all open with big windows looking over the river and the main lodge has a warm and friendly atmosphere which makes it feel a bit like "home".

However, 5 star accommodation is not what makes this a 5* experience - it is the staff of the lodge. When leaving to go home, our group felt sad, as if we were leaving family behind, and this for me shows that they have achieved what they are meant to do - make it feel just like home, but a bit better.

We weren't as lucky with the game as I have been at previous lodges, but our guide Dylan was brilliant. He kept us interested with smaller things like the flora and fauna as well as other types of animals and creatures in the park that you wouldn't normally look out for on a safari experience.
Shadrack, one of the hosts provided excellent service. He remembered everyone's name after only hearing it once, and nothing was too much to ask, not even the big hug he gave all of us goodbye.

The especially made my dad a birthday cake, for him and the guests to enjoy at one of the afternoon teas.

As it is quite small and intimate, you get to know the rest of the guests and therefore also have the opportunity to meet new people, which is great.

I would definitely recommend this lodge to anyone looking for a luxury experience in the bush. I can't gush about it highly enough.

We have just returned from our third stay at Makanyane. Our high expectations based on our previous visits were more than met, in fact they were exceeded. We had fabulous game drives and were very lucky with the animals spotted. We saw more elephants on this trip than ever before and even had them behind our suite and on the path in front of us. We also saw two hippos entering the river behind the suites. We encountered two different leopards at night which was very exciting and I spotted a mother and baby black rhino which is apparently a very rare sight. We followed 2 male lions on their way to feed and had a pride of lions chase a zebra along the road next to our jeep. Lots of animals came to drink and play in the river by the deck at the main lodge building and we enjoyed watching elephants having mud baths before we ate our lunch. The staff are so friendly, attentive and helpful and they make the guests feel very special. The food is outstanding. We stayed for 6 nights and were really sad to leave and return home. We can't wait to go back again. An incredible experience.

Brilliant first safari experience from start to finish!! Got picked up by two of the Rangers and taken in a jeep to the Lodge. What a start to the holiday! Its about a 40 minute transfer from the air strip to the Lodge. Lynette the Manageress obviously knows how to run the Lodge as everything was done like clockwork. You don't have much time to be bored... You are either out on safari, eating or relaxing... Day starts at 5.30am when you are woken up, quick breakfast (cereal, muffins, drink) and then out on the morning game drive. Our Guide was Dillon who was absolutely brilliant and really made an effort for us to see as many animals as possible each day. Back to the Lodge at about 9am and 2nd breakfast at 9.30am. Breakfast is great, full cooked which sets you up again for the day! You have about 3 hrs spare to catch up on your sleep, relax at the pool or go to your "suite" (which is more like a private house) and hang out on your private decking area to spot more animals. Then lunch is about 1pm - the food is second to none. More relaxing, quick afternoon tea (more food...) and then out again for the drive at about 4pm. Evening meal is a different experience every night. You eat in different areas of the lodge which keeps it interesting. Because the max capacity of the lodge is only 16 people it makes it feels like an exclusive experience. When we were there, there was only 5 people at one point (including me and my husband) so it was even more of an exclusive experience. Overall would recommend it to anyone. Would love to go back.

What can be said that hasn't already, all I can say is ......yes the food is fresh, balanced , exciting, filling and oh so yummy,
the game drives full of adventure , fun and information.

The rooms are special, u really feel like you are some place special - I watched elephants drink from the river from my out door shower, hippos hang out while I had the loveliest bath, bush buck wonder past while i relaxed , the bed is perfect and the service perfect .
The lodge is not "stuffy" it's better then that, it's relaxed and personable.
