First impressions, not good! We spent 10 minutes trying to get in the main gate of the lodge, reversing, advancing, reversing, advancing in the blazing sun with warthogs surrounding the car. Eventually my dad got out and just pushed it and it opened. Please please remove the sign if you are not going to fix it because anxious travellers panic when they have just driven quite a distance along a dirt track and realise there is no phone reception to call you to tell you to come and let us in!! . Anyway, I know my review should be based on the safari but wow, what a lodge! We were fortunate enough to stay in the duplex 2 bed family room and when I saw it I felt like a child in a sweet shop- 2 large bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, a lounge, a reading area and a verandah overlooking one of the 2 pools. The food was excellent, the platter they gave us on arrival especially impressive. You eat breakfast and dinner with your game driver and the other companions who were in the same vehicle to give you the opportunity to ask questions about what you have seen etc but as my family is a bit quiet we might have preferred not to have done this bit it does add to the experience in the long run..... Francis was great, full of knowledge, and we couldn't fault any of the staff. My ONLY slight annoyance is that we had to drive 19km along boring dirt roads to reach the main gate of shamwari. Beautiful well kept grounds and two nice pools which we had the good fortune to have one to ourselves during our stay.... It rained heavily on our departure and Brian gave us his mobile number in case we got stuck on the dirt roads on the way back to the highway. Saw 4 of the big 5 (leopards hiding!) and enjoyed the drinks/snacks before making our way back to the lodge. Also impressed at how close we got to the wild animals.
