“Peak experience of our holiday”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 15, 2009

We were very well taken care of by dedicated and skilled staff. Ranger Howard and tracker Sam really do their best to make the most out of every game drive and we saw many different animals, small and big, and learnt a lot about the African environment. Good food and pleasant company in both other guests as well as the owners John and Tanya.

We were to spend three days at Kambaku. Unfortunately, due to weather patterns, we made it in a day late. Tanya and John were very helpful and rearranged the pick-ups from the airport for us to accommodate the changed flights - Tanya even called my UK-based mobile to check that all was well and that we had manage to secure a seat on the next morning's flight. I certainly couldn't say half as much for the airlines helpfulness! It was a real pleasure to have the owners staying at the lodge, especially as they're so hospitable and eager to make sure you're having a good time.
The staff at Kambaku are wonderful and charming and made us very comfortable. A friend has a bad allergy to a particular food and Kambaku happily catered to make sure that she didn't come near it. We were well-fed - masses of yummy comfort food (I'll have to try my hand at the Amarula bread & butter pudding soon.)
As much as anything, we came for the game sightings, and Howard and Albert, our ranger and tracker, were really good and we got to see a very wide variety of animals, including a leopard, which is rarer in this part of the park because of the dominance of the lions. Howard's knowledge made the drives and sightings a real pleasure because he always offered some David-Attenborough-esque commentary to each animal that we spied, gave us extra time for photographs and indulged us with a star-gazing session, identifying all manner of constellations and galaxies that I could never see in London. The one bushwalk we were able to take was really enjoyable, and included a lesson in making fire from elephant dung!
All in all, this was a truly lovely way to finish off our fortnight in South Africa. I have fond memories of the countries, helped in no small measure by the hospitality of Kambaku.

Had a fantastic stay there with my girlfriend. Very friendly people and excellent guides. The staff really turned it into much more than just a safari. Excellent food as well, I will not easily forget the outdoor dinners at night.

We only had 2 nights late October, and the weather was not overly "friendly". However the experience for my wife and I, and 21 and 19 year old kids, was tremendous.
The level of service and attention was first-class – for example the owner picked up a specific food dislike I had from side-conversation, and "hey presto" subsequent meals had separate dishes made just for me (and not with any hint of a request).
The owner also sat with the guests for evening meals which was a very nice touch.
The front-office staff were great - we were greeted as soon as we parked the car; bar and other general staff couldn't do enough for us all.
But of course the key is the Ranger and Tracker – Howard and Sam in our case. Their knowledge, interest and enthusiasm for their work was amazing, and the whole family thoroughly enjoyed every drive and walk.
We will return – but this time for much longer….

We've spent 3 days in Kambaku, 6 game drives. We saw the big 5 and the usual suspects. Lots of birds. The experience was marred by bad weather that spoilt a bit my objective (wildlife photography). But this is of course no fault of the lodge. The people there are really friendly and make your stay relaxed and enjoyable. The rooms are good and the food is great.

The location, service and staff were all above expectations. The weather happened to be perfect for safari and from the welcome to the time we left, we could not have been made to feel more welcome. We ate great and our guide made sure we saw every animal we wanted. The owners happened to be on site and that was a nice treat and ust a great experience. We will be back with our kids and will recommend to friends.

A great camp for the price and the Timbavati is one of our favourite reserves. Saw the big 5 within a 2 night stay which says it all !
