“One of the highlights of our tour.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 13, 2013

For us we have to say the Jackalberry suited us perfectly. Very pleasant staff who were very attentive without being intrusive. Nice quality food, well presented, with good variety including healthy options, all served in pleasant outdoor dining areas, which on some evenings include the added attraction of a log fire.

The rooms were very spacious, with super king beds, corner bath, shower, with generous good quality accessories and toiletries. The game drives were good and added a lot of fun and interest to a really enjoyable stay. We had a close up sighting of a small pride of lions and some great shots of a cheetah resting after a good days hunting.

This is a well managed business, our compliments to all the staff for making our stay so enjoyable.

This was our first camp on our 3 week African adventure. We saw the big five on the first drive, in this lush camp. Our accomadations were outstanding. It was a bit cool while we were there. Our rooms were toasty warm when we returned from our game drives. The fire was ready for us when as we arrived from our drives greated by the very attentive staff. Some of the food was so good that I requested the recipes they were glad to share them with me. Dumay and Tember did everything they could to make us comfortable and yet kept us well entertained during our game drives. We were a bit scared on our first seveal drives and they made our transition into this kind of exploration comfortable. We saw cape buffalo, cheeta, lions, elephants, zebra, hyena giraff, rinos with their babies, wild dogs including a den full of pups upclose. We also saw leopards, and hippos and many other animals. Right next to Krugar with the extras of a private reserve. We often felt very alone in the wilderness.

We have been to Jackalberry at least 3 times over the years. It has retained its excellent rating in our eyes and is a must for game viewing. The Management is excellent, the food superb (especially for difficult people who are intolerant to various foods). The room was clean and tidy, an outside shower and a patio front and back. Game viewing was excellent and Tom (Ranger) assisted by John (Tracker) enabled us to witness some fantastic sights - like a female leopard bringing out her young cubs from their hiding place. We saw this same leopard 2 years previously when she was a young cub. Best to fly in via Hoedspruit and take a transfer to the Lodge.

Jackalberry is a beautiful small lodge in an idealic setting. The staff were amazing- Gideon was helpful and kind. The food was thoughtfully prepared and was always fresh. We stayed for 3 days and didn't see any repeat dishes served at breakfast lunch or dinner- so definitely a change from other buffets. We stayed at Kapama last year and found this lodge to be much more intimate.
Having been on a safari in Krueger the year before, my only critique of jackal berry is in regards to the guide. Our guide was very nice and pleasant, but seemed to be out of sync with the tracker. The tracker and guide need to act as a well oiled machine, and this seemed to be lacking as we were put in more than one awkward position. One of those situations seemingly jeopardizing the safety of the tracker as lions were surrounding the vehicle and we were not able to reverse out of the spot. This may seem like an overreaction from a nervous traveller- but in the heat of the moment the guide was apologizing to the tracker for putting him in that position. Nothing happened- but it wasn't a pleasant holiday experience.
All and all the lodge was amazing and I would definitely go back, but would specify who I would like for a guide.

Dear ChristenH,

Thank you for taking the time to review our property. Your compliments are appreciated and have been passed on to the team. While we appreciate your concern, rest assured that our rangers and trackers are highly trained and FAGASA accredited, and are always in control of any interaction with wildlife. However, we do acknowledge that your ranger and tracker should have ensured that all guests on the vehicle were comfortable in the sighting. We look forward to welcoming you back to Jackalberry Lodge in the near future.

We spent four nights a Jackalberry lodge, it was my sister's 40th Birthday, the lodge made us a beautiful birthday cake and made my sister feel very special the whole day.
we saw Elephants playing in the Dam. Admiring the teenage Lion with his "just got out of bed" hair
sitting with his Mum and sisters.
Thank you to all the staff that helped to make our stay so enjoyable.

Great bush experience where the people and the location make the difference. Rooms are very nice but not really very private nor with great views. Main lodge is very nicely done. Food was excellent as was the service. Brad and Lawrence made ALL the difference. As ranger\tracker team, an awesome team and really just a pleasure to be with them. Unfortunately one ranger with whom we all had dinner one night should not be in the service industry but the next morning that was all forgotten after 5min with Brad and Lawrence. Great animal sightings and a great experience.

Room Tip: Furthest from the main lodge

On our trip to South Africa in September we decided to stay 2 days at Jackalberry Lodge based on TripAdvisor recommendations. We are glad that we did. We had a wonderful time filled with great close-up wildlife viewing, great photos and great memories. The lodge was in a nice private setting with comfortable, quiet rooms. The food was really good and the staff was great. We enjoyed sitting on the patio outside our room watching the Nyala, Impala, Guinea Hens, Hornbills and Leopard Tortoise. John and Brad were awesome as our tracker and guide. They were able to find Lions on a fresh Kudu kill and we also saw a group of Lions chase a Wart Hog and make a kill. They worked hard to put us in the right position to take great photos. We did see 4 of the Big Five. Though we did not see a Leopard, this is a good place to have a chance at seeing all of the Big Five animals up close. We recommend a stay at Jackalberry Lodge for awesome close-up wildlife viewing and great accommodations.

Room Tip: We stayed in the room that was the farthest from the main dining area. The patio was outside the ele...
