“special weekend”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 24, 2014

We decided to travel to Kapama Buffalo Camp to celebrate a special occasion. We had the most amazing weekend there and cannot fault them on anything. The service was friendly, courteous and still very professional. The staff were simply brilliant. The game experience was among the best I have experienced and we have been visiting various game parks for over twenty years. The reserve is expertly managed as can be witnessed in the state of the roads, the condition of the animals, the professional conduct of the rangers and even the condition and quality of the game vehicles. The accommodation is top notch with careful thought going into furnishings, guest facilities and amenities. Tidiness and cleanliness of the camp is really noticeable. The food and beverage was excellent with delicious choice of menu and the presentation just as good. The front of house staff ( Abel and Jabu) and our ranger and tracker ( Collen and Herbert) deserve a special mention as no matter how nice the surroundings, it is the staff that make the experience. We can only highly recommend Buffalo Lodge as a very affordable and special destination, on a par with many "exclusive" lodges. We will definitely be back as we have found a truly great experience destination

Words cannnot even begin to explain how wonderful the 4 nights at Kapama Buffalo Camp were. I was there in late November. Everything was fantastic - the 'tent', the staff, the food - everything. I learned so much from Joe and Foster on the game drives. They did everything possible to make sure each one was memorable and we were able to spot the Big 5 in the first 2 days. Because the camp is small, we received very personal attention and the vehicles never had more than 6 people. I just cannot say enough about the entire experience. It was the highlight of my 3 weeks in southern Africa. I smile everytime I share videos and photos with friends.

We stayed at Kapama Buffalo camp for 3 nights just before Christmas. There's nothing i can say about this place that hasn't already been said - fantastic accommodation, staff, service and food. Our ranger and tracker (Joe & Foster) were excellent and really went out of their way to accommodate us and share their knowledge. It was nice to be able to be able to get out and do some walks during our game drive. Their rules of having only two cars at any sighting was great as it meant that it wasn't over crowded.

We really liked how there were only 10 tents there which meant a more intimate atmosphere and the drives were not crowded. The tents where luxurious and very comfortable.

This place is perfect for a first safari experience but because it is a fenced reserve it did feel like a bit of a big open zoo. We did drive right up to the fence line and drove the same tracks a few times so it made the property feel abit small. If you've been to a proper open park you may not enjoy it as much as we did.

We were at Kapama Buffalo camp for six days at the beginning of November. The place is as good as everybody says it is. And most importantly , all the staff are friendly while still being courteous.
Jeffrey and David took us out on the all-important game drives. They were brilliant. Of course they showed us the elephants, crocodiles, and rhino and giraffes and buffalo and all the other big animals. They found a male and female lion out on a prowl in the evening and these two magnificent beasts were walking along and were so cool and unfazed by us in our truck - magic. But Jeffrey also found the little things, male dung beetles struggling with a huge ball of detritus trying to impress intended mates; ants that make depressions, hide in the bottom and drag down other ants. He found small chameleons that we couldn't even see when they were right in front of us.
He involved everyone and we felt so secure even with a dozen or so lions walking a few feet from us.
The Buffalo camp is intimate, luxurious and very relaxing. My wife had a spa treatment, which she enjoyed, but said that she felt the river lodge she was taken to for it was far more impersonal.
The only downside for me is that on one of the tracks you come across some electricity pylons marching across the bush. For a moment it breaks the magic, but then I am a little too old for hurricane lamps and outside latrines. It is a small price worth paying for the splendour of Kapama's Buffalo Camp.

Room Tip: We stayed in Elephant tent . Very high quality bed and fittings.

everything was fantastic and I can rate 5 stars, comparing to other 8 Lodges, where I also have been. The Buffalo Lodge for me had been THE BEST !!!!
The ranger(s) and trekker(s) had a lot of knowledge and were willing to share their knowledge. They also stopped for an interesting tree, bird, reptile or bug - it was not only a "big five" foto hunt. It was a whole adventure with history, animals and fauna. I, who always wants to know everything it was heaven !!!

We visit the Buffalo camp at kapama for 3 nights. From arriving we were treated like royalty by an awesome team!!! Welcomed by a drink and warm South African hospitality!!! Our host Claire went out of her way to take good care of us and make sure we are comfortable and at all times happy!
Our first gamedrive by Ranger Almero and tracker Benny were amazing, we encounter 3 of the big 5 within a few hours, they are commited, and have excellent knowledge about wildlife, and can feel free to ask them anything, anytime!! Accommodation - pure luxury, service- top notch. We recommend Buffalo camp to all! Thank you to an expiernce of a lifetime!!! See you soon

I found Kapama Reserve through Trip Advisor and couldn't be happier that we chose Buffalo Camp as our lodging. It was the perfect way to experience the African bush!

Kapama is vast and you'll see so many different kinds of wildlife -- we saw 4 of the big 5 (those elusive leopards!) -- rhinos, lions, elephants, and buffalo -- and plenty more animals like giraffes, zebras, kudu, warthogs, wildebeasts, hippos, jackals, hyenas, monkeys, and countless types of birds.

Our ranger and tracker team (Joe & Foster!) were AMAZING. So knowledgeable and patient with our questions, and they went out of there way to find animals for us (including our tracker getting off the truck to find the male lion!). Our ranger even took us on an awesome bush walk (totally recommend this - it's so different from being on a truck!).

The room/tents were very luxurious - with a comfortable bed, rain shower and tub, and plenty of space. The balcony looked over the bush where animals like kudu and warthog came right up the room (it was on stilts).

The whole staff was fantastic and really looked after you. The food was bountiful and tasty. The dinners were a little more rustic (buffets w/ varying types of meats, veggies, grains) but we really enjoyed it.

The best part was how peaceful, quiet and relaxing the whole experience was. I think some of the other lodging on Kapama is more "hotel-like," so if you prefer the quieter and more remote experience while still feeling looked after, then Buffalo Camp is for you.

I also had a massage at the Spa/Wellness Centre and it was fabulous. It's a beautiful facility built on the back of a watering hole, so you can see giraffes and other animals roaming around while you relax. It's amazing.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Reminiscent of a traditional African safari camp, Kapama Buffalo Camp offers a unique and intimate experience in the African bush. It is ideal for discovering big game Africa in true safari tented style without compromising on comfort.Ten luxury newly build canvas tents, each sleeping two, are set on wooden decks built on stilts over a steep-sided riverbank. Wooden walkways interconnect the rooms, which are all in the upper reaches of tall riverine trees. The river below rarely flows and antelopes are seen daily walking along the sandy riverbed. Each tented room has all the usual comforts of electricity, en-suite bathroom, safe, writing table, wardrobe, low impact climate control, mini-bar and tea/coffee facilities. The communal areas of Buffalo Camp are on the riverbank, where gardens of succulent aloes and euphorbia are tended around the thatched bar, dining room, pool terrace and campfire. But the thick African bush is just a glance away, inhabited by animals like lion, hyena and jackal whose calls can be heard in the dead of night. Lanterns, rather than electric lights, glow at night under the trees, creating a special intimate ambience particular to Buffalo Camp. With a maximum of 20 guests at Buffalo Camp, special attention is paid to personal service and the staff become like friends. Kapama Buffalo Camp is a truly authentic way to experience the African bush. ... more   less
