“Over our expectations!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 29, 2013

Making reservations over the web can be a gamble on what you get. Not so with Sausage Tree, it was over the top from what we expected. Everyone was warm and friendly, food was fantastic. The game drives were the best, Mike and our tracker went out of their way to expose the real African bush experience to us. It was exciting to see the animals so relaxed in a reserve where they are protected, allowing exceptional photo opportunities. We were treated like family from Sonja and her staff. I could go on and on about this place. If you are looking for a great safari, don't look any further and book with them. Gary & Marilyn, Colorado, USA.

Room Tip: Ask for tent number two. It's private deck overlooks the watering hole.

Sigh......just settling down to write this review have me overwhelmed with emotions.

The suspense of tracking a rhino in the night (Will we going to find it? Or are we not going to find it? And.......we did!). The high of speeding through the night in response to a radio report of a leopard sighting and later have the animal maybe just three metres away as it nonchalantly strolls past our parked vehicle. The thrill of seeing lion cubs play while a lion lies relaxed after feeding. The warmth of being surrounded with great hospitality. The satisfaction of having absolutely delicious meals made with the freshest of ingredients. The joy of coming back to a comfortable, inviting tent/room after a long day of tracking (there are two game drives daily; one departing about 6am and another at 4pm. Each drive is supposed to last 3hrs but Mike our guide was very easy going and our drives all lasted at least 3.5hrs). Okay, okay so we just sat twiddling our thumbs in the open-topped landcruiser while Mike and Themba our tracker did all the work...... And so much more!

As mentioned by other guests, Sonia and James are great hosts who are ever so attentive. Mike and Themba make great company too. It was always fun chatting with them and we learnt so much from Mike as he would share all these interesting information about the flora and fauna we came across on the game drives. We are still amazed by just how sharp these guys' eyesights are. In addition to the bigger animals, they spotted birds, tiny tiny owls, squirrels and monkeys in trees, animal tracks etc. at night while in a moving vehicle (and Mike's driving)! And they really worked at tracking the animals. Thanks to their hard work, we had sightings of the Big Five and so many more during our four nights at Sausage Tree.

And of course we have to mention Mildred and Josephine the resident "Black Panther" and "White Lion" as Mike likes to call them - Sonia's lovely dogs! The two of them are absolutely adorable. Mildred is so sweet and affectionate that she would frequently walk us back to our tent and a few afternoons she took naps by our side as we relaxed in the hammock.

Then there's the famous watering hole which can be seen from the Sausage Tree deck and Tent 2's front porch. During our stay, we had so many delightful sightings of animals quenching their thirsts - impalas, warthogs, an elephant and her calf, and a giraffe and her calf.

While we may be novices where Safaris are concerned, we can confidently say Sausage Tree is a Not-To-Be-Missed and great value for money.

Thanks again, all at Sausage Tree, for a lovely holiday!

Robin & Karin

A luxury tented safari in a small and very friendly camp. We visited to celebrate a significant birthday but we are already planning when and how to return.
We saw loads of animals as well as flowers and other plants with the knowledgeable ranger Mike and tenacious tracker Tembe. Wild runs in the jeep as well as quiet, exciting walking safaris. We saw all the big animals on our 5 night stay, but we really enjoyed seeing the smaller animals, watching giraffes gambling about, tracking rhino, watching warthogs, spotting jackals and guinea fowl. I even held a chameleon. I'm not the best with spiders or scorpions but pythons and caterpillars are just as wonderful and exotic.
Loved the stopping for Rooibos tea on morning drives and gin and tonic on the evening drives with snacks.
In the camp, the cooking is managed enthusiastically by Orlando and Richard was hosting which made for fun evenings in the boma and then the bar. The tent was spacious and clean and the shower was open to the outside so we could look at the local gnu. Air co and heating were both needed as the weather varied. We had one day of spectacular thunder and lightning.
There are only 4 tents so there are max 8 guests which means you get to know everyone.
All in all, I'd recommend Sausage Tree Camp to anyone.

Sausage Tree Safari Camp is the best lodge in Kruger Park!

Both Sonja & James made us feel at home the moment we arrived.

The place was magnificent. The services was outstanding.

The people were genuine and delightful. The food was remarkable.

The trackers were awesome.... and the price was worth every penny!

I can only say, we definitely will return again... and again... and again...

Thank you both for making our 11th safari in South Africa unforgettable!

Sincerely,
Ru & Tu

Room Tip: Tent no. 2 was opposite the waterhole where many 4-legged creatures come to visit

We recently took advantage of the 4 nights for the price of 3 at Sausage Tree and didn't want to leave when the time came. After reading all the reviews it seemed like it was almost too good to be true, but when we arrived it was clear to see it was all true! The lodge and accommodation was wonderful, the food amazing at every meal and 2 game drives every day which went above and beyond. The expert rangers and trackers made the drives fun and interesting and we had some incredible experiences being so close to the animals that you wouldn't get on larger tours in the Kruger. Sonja, James and all the staff were so welcoming and willing to make your stay extra special. They even helped my boyfriend set up a wonderful romantic setting by the river so we could get engaged! This was very special and we will be forever grateful for their help and kindness. Thanks again!
Sausage Tree is a truly magical place and your stay is made extra special from the minute you arrive until you sadly have to leave. We cannot wait to go back and do it all over again. If you are looking for an amazing place to stay and safari then look no further!
