We stayed three nights at Shadow Mountain Lodge and Cabins and found that the cabins lived up to their excellent Trip Advisor billing. The lodge is located in the upper canyon area of Ruidoso and consists of an office building, wrap-around motel-style rooms with very nice common areas, and four separate stand-alone cabins. We opted for one of the cabins (only slightly more than a lodge room at about $150/night) and were not disappointed. The bedroom and living-dining-kitchen area were separated by a see-through gas fireplace. The kitchen had a small refrigerator, two electric burners, a microwave, and a small toaster oven. All worked fine and were adequate for simple meals. There were plenty of pots, pans, knives, and utensils. There was a small dining table that looked out onto the grass courtyard that separated the cabins. The living room area had two large recliners, television and DVD-player. Our king-size bed was comfortable and the bathroom had a combined whirlpool tub and shower.
One nice feature of the cabins was that you did not have to plan for room service to show up in the morning unless you requested service by hanging a notice on the front door doorknob. If you needed a fresh towel or washcloth, you placed used ones on a chair on the cabin’s front porch by 11 and clean ones would appear in the chair later in the day. A washer-dryer in the lodge area was available for guests to use at $5 a load. Payment was done on the honor system; no need for change. Ice was available from a machine behind the office and DVDs could be rented. Sitting out on the porch, about the size of a small deck, was pleasant with its view of the tall pines, although at times one was also staring at people sitting on their cabin deck on the other side of the courtyard, which was about 30 feet across.
Due to the lodge’s location on a fairly busy street, walking was difficult (no sidewalks), but the drive into town took only five minutes. One popular restaurant was within walking distance of the lodge, but it was closed for part of our stay and we never ate there. The lodge is about 20-25 minutes by car from the Ruidoso Downs horse racing track if one is so inclined. Ruidoso consists mainly of touristy gift shops, bars and restaurants, although we did stumble across an excellent wine shop (named End of the Vine I believe) that specialized in New Mexico wines. We purchased a good Merlot.
Guests should be aware that the lodge is pet friendly and several dogs stayed at the cabins while we were there. Most were well-behaved, but one family’s dog barked continually whenever they left the cabin. The dog also escaped from the family twice during our stay and we were awakened on our last morning to loud cries of the dog’s name as family members attempted to corral him (or her). The lodge has strict rules concerning dog behavior but as most of this happened during our last 24 hours, we did not notify the management.
The cabins have free wireless internet service that worked fine the first night but disappeared for two days thereafter before returning on the morning we left. The very pleasant young woman who served as the office manager was clueless as to what happened to the service or when it would return (she also did not know that the lodge had a guest laundry). We were able, however, to sit on the front porch of the office and access e-mail. Cell-phone service was adequate.
Shadow Mountain Lodge and Cabins is a perfectly pleasant place to stay when visiting Ruidoso and a pretty good bargain when compared to lodging in other mountain resort communities.
Stay in the cabins to the rear of the property to be farther away from occasional street noise.

SO glad that you enjoyed your stay. We work very hard to make each stay memorable. Unfortunately, Marilyn and I had to be out of town (very rare in the summer) during your stay and our staff failed to rectify the wireless signal. We found it down upon our return. ;-) We also apologize for the dog trouble. Once again our staff are learning, but clearly have not mastered dealing with nuisance guests. Pets are ONLY allowed if they are well behaved and only in certain rooms. We look forward to your return visit and thanks again for the feedback.
