“Disappointing”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed July 23, 2010

When I was a child I used to ride by this hotel and think that I wanted to stay there. I finally did, and I was extremely disappointed. The room was relatively clean, but everything else about the hotel was a let-down. The heated indoor pool that was advertised turned out to be unheated. My wife and I wanted to go swimming, though, so we used the net to skim all of the bugs off of the surface of the water, then we got in. The water was downright cold and I couldn't get in above my knees. The jacuzzi was shut down for some unknown reason. The carpet in the hallways was worn out. I asked for a room with a view and got a room with a view... of the trees directly outside the window. Through the branches I could sometimes see the mountain if the wind blew just the right way, but there really was no view. The worst part was the "free continental breakfast". They had a toaster, three loaves of bread, and some toast and jelly. They didn't even have cold cereal and milk! The bread was still in the bags, so you were expected to open up the bag, stick your hand in to get some bread, and then close up the bag. I could only wonder how many dirty hands had been in the bag before mine, so I just decided to skip the "free continental breakfast" and go get an Egg McMuffin.

This property is worn and tired. It needs repainting outside and in, carpets worn bare in spots.
The lighting in the room was extremely dim. It was hard to tell if the room was clean or not. Bedspread ripped on one bed. Towels very thin.

The telephone in the room was broken, with a paper sign on it that they were waiting for a part for the phone system. Most people use their cell phones now, but you couldn't call the front desk. There is free wi-fi here, but only in the lobby. There are plenty of other spots to stay at in beautiful Ruidoso.

I would say the Swiss Chalet Inn could use a complete renovation, but due to its funky, outdated design, it might be a tear down. The location it's in is beautiful. It could use a nice building on it.

We picked the Swiss Chalet for two nights because they accepted pets, and the descriptions sounded good. However, we were disappointed in the stay. We had a family room, which was very large with a sofa, so it had plenty of room, and the room was very clean. However, the beds were so high, it was uncomfortable getting in and out, and the mattress was so hard we both had backaches in the morning. There was no telephone service when we were there - they apparently have an old analog system and had trouble getting repair parts. The outside of the hotel was dirty and not well maintained. The neighbors above us were running around the room at 3:00 am, and we could not contact the front desk. Not a pleasant stay, and like all places in Ruidoso, it seemed over-priced.

The room was clean, however the shower was *disgusting*. Far worse than even a college dorm shower (moldy, soap scum everywhere, etc.). No hot water from the shower either, the temperature was just above lukewarm. The walls are thin and you will hear movement / voices of everyone around you.

Spend a few $$ more and get something decent.

From the very beginning the staff was super friendly. We booked a room online the day before, but when we checked in we asked if there were better rooms. The manager took us to three different rooms that he thought we would like so that we could take our pick, we picked his favorite. The room was wonderful, big four-poster beds, and antique (looking) dressers etc. The view out back of the mountanside was wonderful, especially when the thunderstorms rolled in. We were next to the indoor heated pool, which was nice, but not very warm.
The motel is old, and needs work, but it is charming and homey and comfortable, a refreshing change from the bed-buggy super8's of the world, and the staff treat you like old friends. Internet is available by the lobby and restaurant, I checked my email on the back deck drinking an ice-cold beer, beautiful mountain view and watching a deer graze 20 feet away. I would have paid twice as much. What a bargain!
The restaurant is pricy, and I didn't have the best experience with my high dollar steak, but it worked out eventually, but that's another story.

Beautiful location, very affordable & clean. We stayed in 2nd floor family room with a balcony overlooking beautiful view of mountains. The furniture in the room, was beautiful solid dark wood & the room was huge. This is an older hotel, that can sure use updating. But for the cost & location, it can't be beat

The staff we encountered from the front desk, to housekeeping, security, bar and restaurant, were all outstanding - they could teach a few 4 star hotels a thing about hospitality! The hotel gets kudos on that.

But, there were issues. As one reviewer mentioned, having a confirmation number and confirmed room number didn't matter - none of us in our group were given the room we actually reserved. Room numbers were given to us at the time we made our reservations 6 months before, and it was disappointing to be told that the room was not available. The hotel should NOT guarantee rooms and assign room numbers at the time of reservation if it is not going to honor the request. It would have been better if the reservationist had said that the hotel would TRY to honor the request, instead of specifically stating that the guest would be in a specific room, giving the guest a specific room number with the reservation confirmation number, only to be told upon arrival "sorry, it's not available - we rented it to someone else!" One guy in our group had made a SPECIFIC room number request at the time he reserved his room, but upon arrival was told his room was not available, and in fact, was not even close to his original request! At least the room we were given was just a couple doors down from our original room assignment.

The location of the hotel is excellent and the views spectacular. It is so close in the mountains that we actually saw a BEAR walking across the road into the woods behind the hotel!

However, the property is a bit dated and you can tell they are working to renovate it, as you can tell this hotel was probably once a premier property. Our room was at the very end and we had a balcony overlooking the parking lot, which was ok since my husband could check on our motorcycle just outside the window. (Not such a good thing at 5am to be awakened by the sound of a motorcycle starting up and loud music blaring - which of course, is not the hotel's fault). The room was HUGE and clean, and it appeared to have fairly new carpet. It was in need of a coat of paint and the sagging drapes need to be replaced. The towels are not what I'd call fluffy - they're a bit thin and the bed linens were REALLY threadbare, and we had the worst FLAT pillows. I'm sure there are hotels in town that are much more "plush" but for the $69 price, the Swiss Chalet was not as bad as I thought it would be after reading some of the reviews. The accommodations were just "ok" and we would probably look further down the road next time unless there are some major renovations.

The bar was nice and cozy, but the restaurant prices are really high in my opinion - from $34 for a filet, $9 for a burger, $13 for a salad with breast of chicken. It was worth leaving and taking a short ride around the corner to the Alto Cafe - a quaint diner with reasonable prices and the food is absolutely delicious!

  • Liked — Location - beautiful setting in the mountains; great staff
  • Disliked — Old, thin linens and towels; flat pillows
