“Memories to last a lifetime”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 8, 2011

Having never been on safari before we were a little apprehensive about what to expect. Vuyatela is AMAZING, it's luxury in the middle of the bush. The rooms are big and clean, the food is outstanding, you will not be hungry!

We were lucky enough to get lodge number one, which had the view straight out on the water hole. Being an open camp, the hippo and resident croc could have visited us if they wanted to, but luckily they stayed in the water. We did have a monkeys and buck in our outdoor shower one day, but its all part of the experience.

It is a truly magical experience - the ranger and trackers are brilliant, they can sniff everything out, we saw the big 5 in our first two drives. Nothing beats being out in the bush having your sundowner in the middle of Africa.

Room Tip: room one has to best view of the water hole

Wonderful place to stay. The staff were so very welcoming and the guide and tracker were fabulous. They were so knowledgable and willing to share with us. It was great to have the guide having dinner with us and telling us all kinds of stories about the bush and his life. The lodge and accommodations were beautiful and relaxing. We travelled to Djuma with our two girls (8 and 10) and it was perfect!

I stayed at Djuma Vuyatela while going on my first safari during a couple weeks in sub-Saharan Africa. It was the first of about a half-dozen places I stayed during this trip, which included three safari lodges. Not only was it my favorite place to stay on safari, but perhaps the best lodge/resort/hotel I've ever stayed in.

First things first - the food's incredible. Their chef could be at any top restaurant in New York (where I live, and eat well regularly). From their eland (antelope) kabobs to their mascarpone crepes, the spreads are continually fantastic.

The staff was wonderfully friendly and attentive.

The lodging itself is very comfortable, so much that it's hard to leave. The only reason I dropped one star for sleep quality is you sometimes may hear monkeys crawling all over the roof. Then again, the monkeys are so darn cute it's hard to complain much about them, even when they steal your toast.

Their drivers in the open-air land cruisers are very friendly and attentive, and smart trackers at that. The drivers also join your table at dinner.

It's a very intimate resort - just 8 lodges for a couple people each. You get to know anyone who's around while you are. There are other activities to engage in, from a drive into town to see schools and meet the children there (which we did - well worth it) to walking safaris (which we couldn't do - too many lions were roaming about nearby when we wanted to).

Lastly, the decor's outstanding - they have little touches of Africa everywhere that are hard to properly describe but exemplify the owners' appreciation for detail.

One minor down note: when I left my camera battery charger there, trying to get it from them after I left proved impossible (the saga ended with me hearing a pilot had brought it to an airport I was going through but left it on the plane). Fortunately I found another in a different airport, though they could have made it far less of a hassle, hence one drop in a star for service.

Oh, there's great wifi access. If you have an iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad, I highly recommend downloading the Star Walk app so you can see the stars while you're out at the hotel. Not that I recommend being online too long out there...

From the moment we touched down in our aircraft we were surrounded by the most amazing wildlife. We saw the big five within 24 hours of arriving. Djuma vuyatela lodge is perfect. It has everything you need at a safari lodge without being pretentious or over the top. The staff were fantastic. Most of them are from the local area and all of them are excellent. The food was top notch and rooms very comfortable. Our guide Handry and our trekker Amoss were faultless. They knew every square of inch of the reserve and accommodated your every need while also making sure you felt very safe. To anyone out there looking for the classic African safari experience Djuma Vuyatela is the place for you.

We really enjoyed our stay at the Djuma Vuaytela, game viewing was great and rangers very knowledgeable. Service was excellent and everyone did walk the extra mile to make our time there an unforgettable experience.
The rooms are great, with your own plunge hole, an outdoor shower and all the comforts you may wish for despite being in the middle of the bush.
The common areas are well appointed with an interesting decor, and have a nice view to a water hole were animals often go to drink.
We were concerned about safety before booking and called the lodge. They explained they had hired a guard to walk around during night and he was actually there during our stay. He also walked us to our rooms at night when there were leopards around.
