“Trip of a lifetime - Would stay here again in a heartbeat!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 8, 2014

After researching many of the lodges in Sabi Sands endlessly, we finally decided upon Kirkman's for our trip ( 2 families travelling together). We could not have picked a better lodge for our first safari experience! It is a warm, inviting, beautiful and comfortable lodge with a slightly British feel and as upscale as any 4 or 5 star property without feeling over the top and inappropriate in the bush. To say the staff are warm, helpful and welcoming is also an understatement. We felt spoiled every moment we were there. Thomas, our steward saw to our every need, including a wonderful breakfast in the bush - and the chef provided the most amazing gluten free treats for one of our party. Every meal had new things for her that had the rest of us almost jealous. Our guide & tracker Jason & Jerry were amazing - everyday was a new adventure ( 5 leopard sightings, 2 kills, 2 lions sightings, lion mating, wild dog pups, obviously the Big 5 w/in 24 hours,
leopard cubs, baby rhinos, baby elephants - it was something new every drive) They were informative, fun to be with, stayed out late on drives with us, celebrated at sundowners and in the evening, we miss them still. Cannot think of one thing this property is missing.

My son and I just returned from our first safari at Kirkman's Kamp. The trip was planned to celebrate his college graduation. We arrived at Kirkman's Kamp after a few great days in Cape Town. This is an incredibly special place. The boutique nature of this property was just perect for a five day safari for a father and son.

I find it difficult to identify anything that could have improved our experience. We were greeted by many members of the staff and clearly, the GM - Brendan has carefully hand picked the cast. Every single person, from the housekeeping staff to the wait staff, rangers, trackers, etc., made us feel like we were their absolute priority and went above and beyond to make this an exceptional experience.

The highlight of the experience was the safari. The reserve is full of big five and other animals. Our incredibly skilled ranger and tracker were able to fill every drive with multiple sightings that would be very hard to find elsewhere. We met many other guets at Kirkman's who said that they have been on multiple safaris and that this was, by far, the best place for the variety and frequency of our sightings.

Special mention is well deserved for Brett Devine, our Ranger, Kholin - our tracker. They made each outing unique and exciting. Their knowledge and engagement with us was incredible. Brett's passion for his role and for the guests experience is impressive. We learned so much about the bush, the animals and the history of the lodge from him throughout the week. He is just fantatsic.

The meals were exceptional. Every meal was fresh and options were many. The service was warm and friendly. Our server for the week - Friday - made every meal an event. His personality and level of service were over the top. Rooms are lovely, with a british colonial touch.

This was a week that my son and I will cherish forever. I look forward to returning with the rest of the family next year.

Our 3 nights at Kirkmans was just fantastic. Brendan the GM there went out of his way to make sure all our needs were catered to. His team there is just fantastic, warm, friendly and make you feel at home. Lenox was our guide and he was fantastic. So was Robert our tracker. Their passion for the Bush their enthusiasm and determination on safari was just fantastic. They made each of our safaris so exciting and great. The lodge has a great colonial touch to it and the food was fantastic as well. Thomas our steward was also fantastic and just the whole experience we had will be a memory we cherish for years to come.

The game viewing was second to none. We had many many leopard sightings and lion sightings including a lion kill. We also were very fortunate to have some fantastic wild dog sighting. This was very special to us as its the first time we've seen wild dog after many trips across Africa and Sabi Sands. Lenox and Robert tracked them which was a fantastic experience. It took us around an hour but the reward was worth it.

We had many other sightings of elephants, Rhino, Giraffe, Impala, Cape Buffalo and many other species but the Wild Dog sighting stole the show along with a fantastic Lion Hunt we witnessed. We saw Wild Dog on 3 of our safaris including another fantastic viewing of them on the Sand River. The bush breakfast was also an amazing experience along with the Sundowner.

The rooms are great with nice balcony's overlooking the Sand River.

Thank to the Kirkman's Team for a memorable 3 nights. We will most certainly be back. Thanks again to Brendan for all his help and chats by the bar at night which made us feel like we were at home. You have fantastic team up there and we already miss Kirkmans Camp.

Room Tip: Room 14 has a superb view of the river and a lot of privacy.

Kirkmans Kamp was a reflection of colonial history, enjoyed the decor. The rooms are small but comfortable, Kirkmans has a very different feel to the other &Beyond lodges in that it does not have a bush ledge feel but rather a comfortable, homely farm house in the bush. Bush drives were incredible, our ranger for our stay was very informative and delivered with passion.

This was our first safari experience and we were not very sure what to expect. From the moment we arrived, it was apparent that this resort was going to be the best choice we could have made. The welcome we received was warm, friendly and very personalised - you feel special and valued from the outset. Our lodge was spacious, clean and very tasteful (with an enormous, super-comfy bed!). The relaxed, calm enviornment means that you start unwinding from the very minute you arrive. We were introduced to our ranger Brett as soon as we arrived, along with our fellow safari group with whom we all shared our first evening meal getting to know each other. Brett proved to be extremely knowledgeable not only about the animals and plants we encountered over the next few days, but also he was able to discuss all different aspects of South Africa as we travelled and ate together, answering many different sorts of questions with a lot of insight and passion. Together with our waiter Freddie and Spotter Exon we were treated to the most fantastic few days at the start of our South African adventure. Thank you to all the staff at Kirkman's!

Charming and historic building caught our sight as we first stepped in. Kirkman's Kamp is beautiful. It is sited on high ground overlooking the Sands River, with big trees everywhere. It's a true holiday heaven. We were greeted warmly by the camp's manager Brandon.

We reached there past lunch hour, but the management kept the lunch for us to make sure we had something to eat before the afternoon game drive. We came from another &Beyond lodge, the staff at both lodges took the initiative to communicate to make sure we are taken care of. They even make sure we do not have the same type of dinner on two consecutive days.

Our ranger Sean is full of enthusiasm and drive. Animals in Sabi Sands come in big herds and very interesting to watch. We saw a pride of 5 lions preying on a buffalo. We spotted a few herds of buffalos, elephants, zebras, giraffes etc. We saw a leopard family, a group of wild dogs, a bloat of hippos.

Animals came frequently to our lodges. We saw a happy bush buck running round and round the lawn, hyaenas walking past our dining tables, monkeys waiting for food at the breakfast table.

Our butler Simon is very entertaining. He showed us funny tricks. He coordinated with our ranger Sean to cook us a surprise flapjack breakfast out in the wilderness.

Food wise it's good and abundant. Make sure you taste the cake of the day baked freshly for the afternoon tea before the game drive. We tried the almond cake, the carrot cake, the milk cake - they are all fabulous!

Free wifi is provided at the common area as well as in the rooms. Free laundry everyday and returning the same day, nicely pressed. Free flow of drinks, cashew nuts and dried fruit in the room.

In between game drives, you can chill out at the pool with superb view, do a bush walk with the rangers, go for a drive to see the community works &Beyond has done to the township nearby.

Room Tip: we stayed at room 4, it has limited river view. Room 13 and 14 are on higher ground and full view o...

We visited for 3 nights with my husband and adult daughter. This was the highlight of our trip to South Africa. Wow,where do I begin. From the moment we arrived, they greeted us with warmth, served us a delicious lunch with Moses and loaned us a camera(Brenden) then took us out on the most fun and awesome game drive with Ralph and Richard where we spotted wild dogs. Every day was equally great with wonderful service, genuine hospitality and true sense that they were eager to help our every wish to find the big 5 which we did. We met wonderful guests who all had a wonderful time. The room was big, comfortable and welcoming at the end of a busy day. We used the pool that was refreshing and had a great view. Massage with Jonetta was fantastic. At night someone(Sipht) walked us to our room and made us feel so safe.
I loved Kirkman's Kamp and will return.
