“Great Safari Experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 15, 2013

Me and my girlfriend stayed at Elephant Plains while we were visiting Kruger national park in December 2011. The resort is one of kind and is in the middle of wilderness. We stayed in their honeymoon suite and it was a great experience. It is part of the main resort but it's still secluded from the rest of it. It has huge deck with small pool and a great view. In fact, very early in the morning we saw a leopard walk by on the deck while we were inside the room.

The staff and rangers at this resort are friendly and knowledgable. Their early mornings and evening safaris are a very exciting experience. Make sure you have your camera with you since you will end up spotting the big 5 during the game drives. Apart from the nice rooms, they have a common patio area with a great view and huge dining area and a nice bar. If you want to enjoy nature in peace and quiet, this is a place to stay. And I must mention their food. It's a combination african and european cuisine and it's delicious.

Just returned from 3 nights at Elephant Plains and had a fabulous time. Within 2 game drives we had seen the Magnificent 7 (Big 5 + wild dog + cheetah). Louis, our ranger, and Fan our tracker took excellent care of us. We had 3 families travelling with 5 children ranging from 3 to 11. EP staff was wonderful with the children. It was very kid friendly. They have a nice pool, game room and a library with a DVD player where the kids could chill in the middle of the day. I was very surprised at how well the kids did on the game drives. Louis explained the rules to them and they listened. I think there was so much to see that the kids did not get bored. Also - the food was wonderful. I have dubious after reading reviews before I left but was pleasantly surprised. The chef and her staff did a great job. I had the most amazing fillet steak as well as roast lamb and a lamb potjie. Great food. The kitchen also cooked special, made to order, meals for the kids! The service was amazing. Lindy our server was great. She kept my 3 year old well stocked with bacon! One of the kids was not feeling well at dinner and Lindy quickly got Mom's meal and the kid's meal on trays and delivered to their room! Mohammed in the bar is the best. His wine recommendations were spot on. He even managed to make my girlfriends and I, Don Pedros after dinner. Not an easy feat in the incredible heat! This camp does charge separately for drinks including soda. However, unlike cruises, the cost was very reasonable. A nice bottle of wine for dinner for about $20. Not bad at all. We are already planning our next trip back.

Room Tip: For 2 adults and 2 kids - the suites were perfect.

As part of our South African adventure we spent 4 days in Sabi Sand. After extensive research we identified Elephant Plains as the best solution for us in terms of location, amenities and price point. We were simply blown away by the experience. The very affordable package included airport transfer, accommodations, 2 game excursions daily, all meals. I highly recommend flying in Hoedspruit (airport code HDS) which is a very small airport and the closets to the lodge. There are 2 daily flights from Johannesburg. Then certainly include airport transfer since the lodge is about 90 minute drive from the airport through unfamiliar and unmarked roads. The lodge is spectacular. We stayed in a "standard" room which was far from being standard. Extremely large and specious with all the amenities. Breakfast and lunch were served in the main dining room while dinner was around the camp fire with each night different theme. The staff was very friendly and accommodating. Many memorized our names the first day we arrived. Louis was our driver and game guide. He was extremely knowledgable, friendly, fun, funny and ensured we didn't miss any animal sighting opportunity. 4 Days is a perfect amount of time but could have stayed longer to just relax and enjoy the lodge, the spa and the surroundings. We were a large group of 12 guys but would certainly return on a more romantic-type trip as well...

Room Tip: All rooms are wonderful. We stayed in room #2 which is considered "standard" while some of...

I stayed in Elephant Plains Game lodge with my large family over Christmas for 2 nights (4 safaris) and I was very impressed by the place.
The rooms ( I stayed in Buffalo) we were using 5 rooms ( the luxury suite with its own swimming pool) and the family room (rondavel) were simply wonderful. With big bathrooms and outdoor shower and private deck with view over the plain. I got to see impalas and elephants from there during the afternoon break.
The rangers and trackers (Willie and Connie and Louis and ?) were very knowledgeable and did all they could to get us to see as many animals without disturbing them. We got to see Rhino and a Leopard with her cub (which we did not see in Kenya 2 years ago). They even made waking at 5am bearable!!

The place is very pretty and the rooms as not too far from the dinning room or swimming pools.
We had dinner in the Boma (outdoor place with a fire in the middle) and we had a little dance with the staff for Christmas.

I really enjoyed the open cars and all the stuff we learned from the rangers during the breaks we had during the safaris -amazing views at sunset.
I would defionitely recommand this place whether you travel with family or just a couple. Everybody in my party found it a brilliant lodge.

The only thing I would say it that there are no phone in the bedrooms only one in reception and the internet was pricey and slow. It is not very important but useful to send pictures and talk to your loved ones especially during the holiday season.

Room Tip: I was in the Buffalo suite which was amazing. I almost felt guilty to be only 2 in the room as it is...

Thank you very much for your kind feedback. We are glad that you and your family decided to spend Christmas with us! I will be sure to pass your compliments to our staff. Concerning the latter points you mentioned - we have been struggling to get full internet connectivity at the lodge due to our line of sight with an important signal giving tower located in Hoedspruit. This is the only reason why we don't have connectivity around the lodge and only at reception, but we are still working on it. Concerning phones in rooms, we haven't really had complaints about this before as all the mobile service providers operate at the lodge and guests normally just prefer using their mobiles. I hope this helps clear some things up. Please do visit again! Regards, Marlet Swart

We stayed at Elephant plains for 3 days and what an incredible time we had there. Right from the first welcome the staff were incredibly helpful and professional with a real sense that they went beyond expectations to ensure we enjoyed ourselves. It was my first safari experience and my husbands 2nd, our thoughts were as follows

1) Game driving - we saw the big 5 within 3 drives and really good quality viewings, we even saw a leopard with cubs, wild dogs and a herd of elephants in the watering hole having a great time. Our ranger Willie and tracker Connie were excellent, they was very knowledgeable about all the animals we saw and went out of his way to get us to good positions for sightings whilst remaining unobtrusive to the animals, We were particularly impressed with some driving skills he showed whilst getting us to the leopard with her cubs! The area did seem quite densely packed and there was a lot of off roading to get to sightings, this added to our enjoyment.

2) The accomodation - Our Rondavel was lovely, really spacious and clean, we arrived to rose petals on the bed - it was out honeymoon and they continued to go beyond the normal by running us a bath with petals and a bottle of fizz as a surprise which was such a lovely touch.

3) The food - We loved the food, in particular the breakfast served on the deck near the swimming pool with monkeys in the tree canopy above! The evening meals alternate between buffet and plated, all delicious, considering location and how difficult obtaining food must be a really wide selection and gave a sense of traditional african food which we liked.

4) The staff - Excellent, they were all without fail incredibly friendly and attentive, we used the spa facilities which were lovely particularly with the view from the open window, don't think i've had a massage in such a beautiful setting.

In short, we were delighted with our stay and couldn't recommend here strongly enough, we will definitely be coming back!

Room Tip: We had room 5 I think which was one of the rondavel, it had the best view as our deck was directly o...

Everything is perfect: location, staff, food, Game-drives, animals sighting,...an absolute must if you're planning to visit the Krüger Park! Even the small fitness room is not superfluous since the game-drives in the morning and in the afternoon last 3 hours each!

My experience at the elephant plains lodge was incredible! My husband and went to south africa on our honey in march 2012 and the safari was one of the top things to do on our list. We spent hours short listing resorts but we could not make up our mind. We were scared and a little bit hesitant as we had never been or experienced such an adventure. But luckily we chose elephant plains and lets just say we made an incredible decision.

We drove about 8hours from jo'burg to sabi sand game reserve and when it started getting dark the staff at elephant plains kept calling us to check up on us. Once we arrived the resort was beautiful, cosy and very personalised. It was a world of its own. Our room was spacious, clean and well equipped. The bed was covered with roses and and net(as it was our honeymoon). The main area had a reception, dining room, a small pool where you could order drinks and have your meals. Every morning before the game drive we were served tea/coffee, followed by a good breakfast, a bush walk and then some rest time. A game drive took place in the afternoon too and lasted about 2-3hrs. We were lucky to spot the big 5.

On our departure we had to leave early morning as we had a flight to catch..the staff at elephant plains was so courteous that they packed up breakfast for us. A special thanks to loius our driver for being so careful and friendly!! Thank you for an awesome adventure of a lifetime. With love, all the way from Pakistan!!
