Owner description: The Madrid Old Coal Town Museum is being "Resurrected"...beginning in April 2012 with new exhibits & stories of the past in Madrid. Madrid has an amazing and unique history, for a little town that was discoved because of its coal, with connections to the Manhattan Project and John. D. Rockerfeller. New exhibits include the Madrid "Town of Lights" - which inspired Walt Disney, The Madrid Miners Baseball Team with interesting connections to the Chicago White Sox, A Ghost Town exhibit, The Madrid ballpark (the first lighted ballpark in New Mexico) and the Film & Movie Exhibit and more!

“It's not the Smithsonian but it's funkey...”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 13, 2012

It's kind of fun and doesn't take too much time. If you take this little drive up or down NM 14 there's plenty of time to spend some time in the little village of Madrid. However, I recommend a warm day cause you'll be out in it. Have a bite to eat at the local cafe.

“Interesting”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 6, 2012

Don’t expect pretty exhibits here, but it is well worth a quick visit. Everything is pretty much the way it was left decades ago. The museum is spread out through several ramshackle buildings and includes a full train engine, mining equipment, a work shop, and the local theater which is still in use. There is also a dusty but interesting exhibit on Thomas Edison’s work at electrifying the mine and the town of Madrid, and his attempts at gold mining. It is certainly worth a quick tour and a must see for history and mining enthusiasts.

“Interesting slice of local history”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 17, 2012

Not too much to see at this museum. They do have a 1901 Train and some train and local history artifacts. Kind of small, but still worht a visit.

“Funky Museum, nothing like it anywhere else!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 11, 2009

Visited the Old Coal Mine Museum while in Madrid, not like the typical museum. Its outside and self guided....lots of old stuff, a train, jail cell, my kids liked seeing the old cars.
