“Fantastic place to stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 21, 2010

I have stayed with David and Jinny many times - usually in the Billy the Kid room - during my numerous trips to the Lincoln area. The Inn is quiet -- haven't encountered any ghosts even when I stayed one night completely alone when David and Jinny were in New England studying leaves! The area is beautiful and historic. David and Jinny are incredibly accommodating, even when I've arrived in the middle of the night. And, of course, the food is absolutely top-notch!

My Hubby and I wanted a place to seek some refuge for a couple of months. We have family in Roswell, NM and have always loved the little town of Lincoln,NM. However, after driving through here in September. We had decided to make it a go for the winter. We stopped by the Ellis Store and spoke to David and Jinny. They were delightful from the beginning. We agreed on a price and here we go!

This place is magnificent!!! The food is to die for and the rooms truly take you back in time. David's family is from Lincoln and he and Jinny both have a true passion for this town. With the population of about 25, we can see why. If you ever want a "true" getaway. And we mean....from it all. This is the place to do it. It's so quiet and peaceful that you can really get back to the nuts and bolts of your life.

We couldn't think of a better place to have picked for the winter and meet some very wonderful people. Come see what the "True America" is still all about. David and Jinny will feed you the perfect food and you will not be disappointed. Oh and some say it's haunted....It's just the old house. You'll love it!!!!!

This would have been a fabulous place to stay, and should have been. However, when we arrived the owners informed us they had given us the wrong rate for the rooms we requested, so that wasn't exceptionally professional. That night, there were bugs (and LOTS of them) in one of the beds. We all had to sleep upstairs together, so that wasn't very relaxing. The owners were very nice people, and tried to be understanding of the (again, LOTS) of bugs we found while we were sleeping, but we couldn't stay due to the bed bugs.
On a strange note, prepare to feel a little creepy when you stay here...the owners, the neighbors, and other guests believe it to be haunted!

If you really want to get a feel for the Old West but want to do it in comfort, you must stay at the Ellis Store. We were going to visit Roswell but the hotels and the town didn't look interesting. Lincoln is only a hour from Roswell so it was an easy day trip.

The rooms and the entire property just ooze history. My husband and I spent most of our time sitting on the fabulous front porch. It was so easy imagining Billy the Kid and the Regulators leaning against the same posts, twirling their guns and discussing the day's events.

The rooms and bathrooms were well cared for and still kept the charm of 150 year old building. (We stayed in the Billy the Kid room.) The beds and linens were high quality. There was no air conditioning but the 2 ft. thick adobe walls and ceiling fans kept it very comfortable. Parking is right outside the doors of the rooms which is always a plus for us.

We took the option of a 6 course dinner cooked by the owner, Jinny, which was the highlight of our stay. It was a little pricey but we discussed the menu with Jinny before we arrived and she went out of her way to make the menu to our wishes. David and George served us in style in the main dining room and their wine choices were excellant. It was an experience we will always remember.

The owners were very knowledgeable about the history of the inn and Lincoln. The historical sites of Lincoln are within a very short easy walk from the inn.

All-in-all, if you can fit in a night or two into your New Mexico itinerary, definitely include the Ellis Store and Lincoln. It is also the perfect place to go if you just want to detox from civilization for a few days. There are no TV's, WiFi or video games so kids and teenagers might get bored. If you want to see more pictures than they have on their web site, they have a video on YouTube.

Added note: One review mentioned the ghosts of Ellis Store and said he felt it was a little creepy. There is absolutely nothing creepy about the inn. In fact, I was looking for ghosts and nothing happened. If you're looking for a ghost, maybe you'll be luckier than I was. If you're not looking, I doubt you'll find one.

When I arrived it was very late but David, one of the owners waited up for me to show me to my room. I stayed in the old doctors' office. It was beautiful. The perfect room for the honeymoon or an anniversary. The comfortable queen size bed was full of beautiful cozy pillows. White lace hung in drapes above the bed making the room sleepy and romantic. There was an antique armoir in one corner of the room and an old fashion stove in the other. The large bathroom had a shower tub large enough for two people. The next morning I met George, David's brother in law. He told me about the history of the room I stayed in and Billy The Kid. Plus, gave me a wonderful tour of the property, including the large house in the back that was once used as nurses quarters. In the main house, the kitchen and dining room where I ate breakfast with the other guests is over 100 years old. It's the oldest room in the county. The food was delicious and plentyful.
Ginny, David's wife and co-owner is a wonderful cook and host.

What a peaceful night. Just expected a good night's rest and got so much more. The best part of our 5 day road trip through NM. You must stop here! The food was wonderful and so unusual - something you would find in a big city - not in a small historic town.

The hosts were so nice.

Very nice night here to kick off a whirlwind week of touring NM. Beautiful, historic, good food, relaxing, comfortable room (Dr. James), off the beaten path. What more could you want? This was my favorite spot of an excellent week.
