“old style charm”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 17, 2014

what a cool place. old school but charming. we stayed in the Jane Wyman room. small but clean. a nice overnight but too cramped for an extended stay. we really liked the charm even if the shower was camper sized. the pull chain for the light was a nice touch. original medicine cabinet.

the bed was comfortable but the A/C has no control. it was not hot though and we were there in July.

the lobby and the history is what makes this place. along with the night manager. he was a character.

When we first walked into the lobby we were blown away. A player piano belted out upbeat tunes. Beautiful red velour furniture was everywhere. Western lighting and decor were indeed impressive. The second floor balcony has dozens of photo of movie stars that said here. Our room was on the third floor, but the desk clerk is required to operate the elevator for you. The room and bathroom are a tad small, but this is how hotels were built back on the day. The room had a flat screen TV, alarm clock, ceiling fan, and wifi. If people are looking for full amenities and a free breakfast then go elsewhere. However, if you want to live like the stars live then this is your place. This is definitely a Route 66 gem.

Quaint hotel with a great history , but staff and general service sadly lacking.
Bar person so rude we felt it best not to stay too long. Dinner was tasty but took for ever to arrive .
Our breakfast was delivered to the wrong table, waiter didn't see that as a problem.
Call in and take a photo but don't waste your money here.

A step back in time. Do not stay at the El Rancho if you are looking for granite in the bath rooms! It is quaint, old and charming. Rooms are small but original. Staff is always wonderful and friendly. Just an overall wonderful experience!

Though I have read many reviews on TripAdvisor I have never left one. My experience at El Rancho was so bad I had to go strait to my computer and warn people not to waste their money here! Cool lobby. Take a photo and LEAVE! Staff was SO rude and dinner was disgusting!

This is a great place to stay when in Gallup and it is a favourite stopping point on Route 66.
The rooms are kept in old style and are all named after film stars who stayed there,
The restaurant was excellent and the 49's bar serves excellent margaritas in a nice atmosphere.
The lobby is impressive and worth seeing even if yoiu don't stay there.
The staff were all very friendly and quick to assist with the elevator which has to be operated by one of them.
The only slight criticism was that there were no coffee making facilities or a hair dryer in the room which I think could have easily been supplied without spoiling the historic feel of the room.

We stayed here on our cross-country trip on Route 66. I had read quite a bit about the hotel and the history, so I opted for a stay here for $130 for one night. It is not worth the money. The lobby is quite interesting, but the rooms are marginally maintained and not exceptional in any way. I would have sooner visited the lobby and stayed at a Motel 6 for half the price. The room would have been identical and maybe I would have gotten free breakfast. The restaurant prices were very high for the area. Plus, I'm not sure who the self-aggrandizing Armand Ortega is, but he sure likes to have his name plastered on everything around here, including his own private owner's parking space right outside the front entrance. Really? Anyway, visit the hotel, but stay somewhere else.
