“Love this place!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 18, 2013 via mobile

Not your average stop, so comparing it to anything else will disappoint you!

So many movie stars have stayed here, eaten here, loved and fought here.

Food is good and so is the service.

Check your judgements at the highway and enjoy!

The dining choices are slim in Gallup, but don't miss El Rancho. We were able to get request several changes to the menu items that made them more interesting and less run-of-the-mill. After dinner, be sure to browse the Ortega's gift shop for an excellent selection of authentic Indian silver with 40% discounts off the ticket price. The prices were so good that we detoured on our way back from the Canyon de Chelly to do more shopping.

Fortunately we only spent one night here. I was really looking forward to it as the reviews made it sound amazing not least because of the great cowboy actors that had stayed here. Sadly it only impressed on paper. Check-in was slow which you expect when in a group however they knew we were coming and didn't seem prepared. We got to our room via the antiquated life (all part of the charm I suppose however the lift attendant was miserable & didn't speak). It was hot so we put the manual ceiling fan on & the cord came off in my husband's hand. He couldn't use the 2nd cord as it was too short. Great start. The room was large with 3 wardrobes. The bathroom however was smaller than the wardrobe & the toilet itself had been installed crooked and an inch away from the wall !!!. Would love to meet the designer who decided that 3 large wardrobes were more necessary than a minute bathroom.
We left the room to go to dinner & the barstaff were rude & unhelpful. They also wouldn't allow us to put our drinks on our room bill but wanted paying there & then - unusual I would have thought. The restaurant meal wasn't that great & again terrible service. Breakfast next morning was so slow & the staff so alwful that some of our group left without eating as they had been ignored for so long. The food was substandard & basic.
It's a great shame as it could be a wonderful hotel with all the romantic history of a bygone era but sadly the management have it totally wrong. Out of all the hotels we were staying at on our road trip, this was the one I was most looking forward to so was so very dissapointed.

The lobby of El Rancho is packed with great artifacts signed pictures of the many stars who've stayed there. The furnishings are interesting and have real character. Other than that the restaurant and hotel were extremely disappointing Poor mattress - lumpy. Only two pillows, not even extras in cupboard. No hair dryer. No power point in bathroom. Pool was dark green and disgusting. Room extremely small. Bath plug didn't work.

Room Tip: Have none.

Recently we went looking for the Route 66 I haunted 45 years ago. Didn't find it except in a very few places, and this hotel was one of them. I really wanted to find the Gallup I knew but that is totally gone, except here. Walk in and the lobby takes you instantly back. Old West and Hollywood with a layer of funk. You can see what it once was. You really need to stay here as your other choices are chains without flavor. Be prepared to haul your luggage up the stairs unless willing to wait for someone to run the elevator. Look with curiosity, and maybe some apprehension, at the semicircular, brick walled and somewhat shabby halls with doors that maybe resemble cell doors. But! they are stenciled with old Hollywood names and what had been transoms for ventilation. We paid a few dollars more and got a huge room (two rooms made into one) with a large bathroom. The furnishings were old, but not antique old. Everything was neat and clean, but not gleaming counters type of clean.

The restaurant was very good with an underlying charm that no amount of trying will get you in a chain hotel.

I loved the staff. No trainees ground through the corporate mill here. Just humans with their own particular slant on service.

Okay, we did get mildly accosted in the parking lot by a wandering soul searching for his own reality, but a young security man appeared seemingly from nowhere and gently urged him on his way. The fellow guests were an eclectic mix, many looking for the same thing we were.

After your stay here you will be telling your friends about it when you get back home. Do you do that after staying at a cookie-cutter chain hotel?

Room Tip: Pop for a few extra dollars to get a larger room. Go for at least the second floor so you can have...

It's a great Historical Hotel. If you want large bash, modern rooms and all the conveniences of today, like some of the reviewers apparently did, don't stay here. It has small baths, cause they are original. If they were to put in big new baths, that would ruin it. The main lobby is awesome. I admit, some things are dated and could use a little repair, but it is what it is. The staff is super friendly. I'm not a fan of Gallup, NM. People constantly walking up to you asking for money. Parking lots and streets dirty, everything in need of repair.
