“Such a Special Place!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 28, 2012

We stayed here for three nights with three friends from the UK. As we left off the main road into Farmington, we immediately felt a lower level of stress from traveling on major highways all day. As we descended into the peaceful riparian site of the Silver River Adobe Inn, we expected to love it, and our expectations were fulfilled. We were greeted by David and were shown to our room. We had booked three rooms, and everyone was delighted with theirs.

A very special unexpected addition to our stay was David sharing his knowledge of the area and best ways to travel to our daily travel destinations. Diana's moving readings from selected texts were also a special bonus.

Diana's breakfasts were innovative and great. One of our party needed more protein, so we had an additional up-boost at T. J.'s Downtown Diner in Farmington.

We had two dinner meals at the 3 Rivers Eatery; good food and atmosphere.

I do love a captive audience seated at the breakfast table to read one paragraph about the heroine, Grey, of Scott Momaday’s book “Ancient Child” on page 16. This paragraph just seems to exude our area; Grey’s childhood home at Lukachukai (one of the most beautiful words I know to roll off the tongue), Grey hoarding bits of both Kiowa and Navajo languages and Native masks. Grey has read many books which you and I have known: Will James, Walter Noble Burns, Emily Dickinson, Laughing Boy and The Saga of Billy the Kid. Then we can discuss the mysteries written by Tony Hillerman and Craig Child’s books especially “House of Rain”. Thank you for sharing your life with us.

What an unexpected find - such a haven in the middle of Farmington's chain hotels and restaurants! David and Diana are gracious, warm hosts, and made me feel right at home from the start. The breakfast was delicious, and the conversations were enlightening - they both know so much about New Mexico's history, especially David.

The room was beautiful, albeit a little dark, which I didn't mind, as it was glaringly bright outside during most days. I had a patio that faced the river, and in the evening, I took a short walk to the beautiful river. Such serenity and beauty, just a short walk away!

Diana and David also have a wonderful puppy who absolutely lit up my mornings! :o) And they had great recommendations for movie festivals and movies to watch (in fact, Diana dug up a DVD for me to watch - how sweet).

I would definitely stay here again. Beautiful property, wonderful, kind hosts.

Room Tip: Choose the room that has its own personal patio and faces the river! (with its own private entrance...

Our guests bring us the gift of themselves and their varied experiences. These guests show us the reverence they hold in their daily lives. They teach us about their world and for that we are grateful. We hope to be able to create an environment which brings comfort and a sense of safety to the person, couple or family on holiday or the person who is traveling on business.

It is the nature of an adobe wall to absorb light rather than reflect light. Many buildings using older, traditional materials such as adobe or rock, as in a castle; or wood, as in a log cabin, have the advantage of giving a sense of the warm mother earth energy, adding that energy which emanates strength. A Hobbit house has this same feel to it. Many dwellings hewn from natural materials the world over create a secure feeling of a safe cave much like many of us experienced in our childhood club houses. In the desert it is a relief to enter a darkened room on a summer day. We had the option of plastering our adobe walls and then painting them but we choose to keep the feeling of an earthen structure. With this choice we have saved the resources of plaster and the need for continued painting throughout the years. Enjoy!

If you like quiet surroundings and rustic comfort this is for you. Breakfasts prepared with locally grown ingredients. Good coffeee.Stimulating and informative conversation with both David and Diana. We stayed here in 2010. Would certainly return.

Room Tip: The Cottonwood room.

We booked this Bed & Breakfast due to the outstanding reviews we read in advance - we're certainly not fussy but what we found upon arrival slightly differed from former guests experiences. First of all, the rooms - beautiful as they were - had a little ant problem. It appeared to be a permanent, not a temporary problem, as it was even mentioned in the guestbook inside the room. I'm fine with ants in my garden... in my bed, not so much! Also, there were tons of spiders in the bathroom, which I didn't find all that thrilling, to say the least. Again, there was a note from the hosts saying that the spiders and ants had every right to be there, much as we had, so that is that.
Breakfast was o.k, but it was all fruits and sweet stuff, not quite everybody's taste. Much as I liked it, my husband would have preferred something a little more savory maybe.
The hosts were nice enough, even if slightly on the chatty side. You better check your watch and make sure you get out of the breakfast room time if you have plans for the day because they have a habit of getting you all wrapped up in conversation and if you join in, trying to be polite, you end up being too late for a lot of the tours you might have planned for. Good location for people who want lots and lots of information and fancy a good long conversation - if you want to see as much as you can and are in a bit of a rush, you better stay some place else...

The insect world presents more than a few dilemmas. We looked high and low to solve the problem of ants who wish, on occasion, to share our home and B&B. It is the goal of our business to not use poisons that would remain and harm our guests by being air born. We believe we have solved this problem. Though ants present no initial danger to humans it is true we do not like to share our indoor space with them and the same is true of spiders. We work to keep insects out of the guest rooms without using poisons which would harm all concerned. We do not wish for any guest to feel invaded by these creatures. Did you know that there are more ants by pound weight on the earth than the pound weight we humans make up? We are out numbered by weight but hopefully we can find ways to live in harmony with each other, humans on the inside and ants out of doors.

The website of the silver adobe inn promises a lot,but what a deception ! The garden was shabby, there were no comfortable places to sit. The room was dark, it smelled dusty, due to the dirty carpet and the heater made a lot of noise. We heard eveything from the adjacent room. There was not much privacy, and the owners were not hospital. We love healthy breakfasts, but this breakfasts were not tasteful at all, the owner is not a good cook. We didn´t feel at home in this place,

We hope that each guest will find some charm and enjoy what we offer.
Two guests staying together wrote tone review each using the same language of disapproval and disappointment. It is obvious that they did not like our B&B, nor my husband nor myself. For that I am greatly sorry for their grief and disappointed.
Our carpets are of thick wool and we not only vacuum them but give them a wipe down. We use no poisons or chemicals to clean the rooms but they are sanitary after we clean. The Juniper room is not full of light as a sun room but feels ever so cozy on a hot summer day. There are two widows in the bedroom plus six lights, two of which are above the bed for reading. There are two windows in the bathroom plus six lights. We live in New Mexico, perhaps that is the cause of the dusty smell but we use wet cloths to wipe down the rooms for each new guest arrival. The adobe wall might have a dusty smell but I do not believe it does after nearly 27 years since it was built. We wash the bathroom floor on hands and knees to ensure that the floor is clean without any hair or debris remaining on the floor. Our landscaping is natural and uses permaculture concepts. The MacDonald Cottage does offer an English manicured garden but the Silver River Adobe Inn grounds are those of the natural world.
As the former director and museum curator of the Farmington Museum based in Farmington's history I love to give ideas to our guests about which places they should visit in relation to the time they have plus their particular interests. With this we usually talk about not only Tony Hillerman's books, the history of the Navajo People but include Craig Child's book "House of Rain". David's knowledge of the geography, and geology, and my knowledge of the area's history plus our interest in the literature of our area allows us to have an abundance of information to share. Blessings to all.

a dark room with dirty carpets and a noisy airco, and a shabby garden. The host and hostess were too present, but could not give any suggesting for sightseeing. The breakfast was terrible.
To expensive for what we got.

Don't try to get there at night! It is almost impossible to find in the dark. The fire station landmark is very obvious during the daytime, but otherwise.....
Loved the river side location. Nice to sit outside in the sun and read. Furry slippers provided, good for the concrete floor in the bedroom. Excellent shower head, lovely towels, & good bath soap which you are encouraged to take home -- I did.
We weren't too partial to the breakfasts -- one morning stopped to get a breakfast burrito afterwards. Good coffee, and fresh apple cider though.
Maybe too much like staying in someone's home for us.

Thank you for your response.
We encourage our guest to give us a telephone call if they do end up arriving after dark so that we can either talk them through the directions or come to where they are at the moment and we then guide them in. This is not an issue in the summer but certainly as winter takes away our late sun a late arrival will be without the aid of the light of our sun.
Our breakfast is listed as "Continental Plus," with a freshly baked pastry, fruit, juice, coffee or tea. We strive to use organic ingredients when possible and the last few years it has become much easier to procure organic ingredients. Our guests come to us with a wide variety of experiences and developed tastes. We do hope to have them find a healthy choice in the breakfast provided.
